grinding
I have a 99 4.2 and when the tranny is warm it will gring in 2 to 3 gear but not all the time is this normal? Ford has said that it is because it is a aluminum tranny and the aluminum will expand. Is this true? My warrenty will be off in the next few weeks so what can I do

Whoever told you that is full of BS. I spoke with a transmission mechanic the other day concerning these R2 Mazda transmissions. He indicated most trouble is from running the fluid low. That being said, this is from the factory shop manual diagnostic procedures:
Hard shifting:
Transmission difficult to shift:
The ONLY aluminum item on these transmissions is the case. Everything else is either steel or bronze. Stay in their butts.
Hard shifting:
- Insufficient clutch system fluid
- Damaged clutch slave cylinder
- Transmission concern
Transmission difficult to shift:
- Low or incorrect lubricant
- Worn or damaged internal shift mechanism
- Binding of sliding gears and/or synchronizers
- Housings and or shafts out of alignment

Ford man I agree with you about that most of the problems comes from running the trans low on fluid. But most of the messages here are from people that have trucks that are new. Futher more where is the oil going if it is getting low? A leak? Then that would open the door for another problem that would require repair. In the owner manual it says " 5 speed manual trans needs no maintenance or fluid change. The average consumer would go by that and never look under the truck. Therefore if there was a slow leak and was not seen on the driveway the average person would not suspect any problem. It seems there is always an excuse for a factory defect and that it is the owner's fault.
You just have an axe to grind with your friggin' dealer. You've seen what the factory service recommendation is and you still persist.

Ford man, I took the time to read my owners manual from front to back. I do not rely on what other people tell me. In my owners manual on my 1999 F150 it says under scheduled maintenance it says lifetime fluid and does not need servicing. I asked the tech after my 1st transmission how offten to service the trans and he said "it does not ever need servicing the fluid is not to be changed". I may not agree with that but that is what it says. LIKE I SAID the average and normal person would tend to read the owners manual and go by that. I think you need to understand that people do use there trucks for more than just pulling there john deer tractors around the farm or driving 10 miles to the local store. There is always and excuse for a defect but no excuse for poor maintenance.
I am having the same problem with my third gear. Not all the time but sometimes it will make a grinding noise when going into 3rd. I know I have the clutch in all the way and I know it is not low on fluid because there is no leak unless it came from the factory that way. I am going to take it in but I hate to have to leave it there for 2 or 3 days. I only have 12,500 miles on the truck so I will probably wait until it is more frequent that way they can't say nothing is wrong.

Ford man I guess your right! I should have changed or checked the oil in my truck 13000 miles on the 1st transmission replace. Then I guess I should have checked it or changed it again on the 2nd trans at 14000 miles. Oh better yet I should have changed it or checked it on the 3rd trans at 16000 miles. Maybe on the 4th one at 17800 miles I should have checked it or changed it then? I am saying this, I do believe that Ford makes a good truck. But in my case and other people with the same complants that there 5 speed trans are not up to par. My story is not weak, I have paper work and service orders to prove it. 5 Transmission shops have said that Ford trucks do not have well built trans. Even one of the techs from the dealer said that "they are not a very strong transmission". One shop said he was going to write Ford a thank you letter for giving him all the work.

I know how you feel, each time my trans was replaced it stayed in the shop for a soild week. The trans are shipped via road way freight and it takes a while. I get a grind from 2nd to 3rd. There is some people that believe it's the truck owners fault. Well I disagree, there are to many people with the same problem. And who has ever heard of checking or changing your oil under 20.000 miles with out having a leak.

I posted a question in the "F-150 5 spd manual - experiences?" topic based on a hard shift to 3rd and an occasionally grind. I was taking the truck in for regular service and wanted some Forum advice before mentioning it to the service department. It was only a minor concern to me.
I picked the truck that same day and was told that they ordered a new transmisson for it. OK with me I suppose. Could be that they have seen this before as I doubt they had time to disassemble it and only test drove it a mile or so.
New 5spd is supposed to be in about a week or two from now. I try and get some info from them then.
btw,I am a new f150 owner (has 7800 miles) and feel that this is a great truck in all respects especially the 4.2/5spd combination. I've no axe to grind with Ford or my dealer (who handled this quite well from my perspective).

Mine doesn't grind, but is hard to shift from 1st-2nd, and sometimes 3rd gear is a problem. And other times, it slips right into place. I checked the clutch fluid and it was way full.
