Question 98 E40D Tranny Fluid Change

I am in the process of doing the 30K service on my truck. Does anybody know what the tranny pan bolts should be torqued to? Also, is there a specific pattern to torque them?

Thanks,

Jim

If it is the 4R70W transmission, which I think it is, my 97 Ford shop manuals show 9 - 11 foot pounds. I doubt it has changed. No pattern shown but it makes sense to pattern tighten them as them evenly as possible. It says you can inspect and reuse the gasket if it is alright. I show 14 bolts. Right?

It is the E40D tranny. Does your shop manual have those specs also?

Thanks,

Jim

Are you sure that means you have the 4R100. Did you get an F150 with the "California Emissons Package" or something? That and the lightning are the only ones that got the 4R100 that some still callthe E4OD. But I get confused as to why because E4OD just means "Electronic 4 speed OverDrive" and both trannys in the F150 are exactly that so you will need to be sure which specific one. But if it is so that you have the 4R100 then No my manuals only cover the 4R70W. These manuals are for the 97 F150 covering the 4.6L and 4.2L but they all had the same tranny including the 5.4L unless it was the case mentioned above. There would be a "U" code under the letters "TR" on drivers side door sticker for the 4R70W. If you see an "E" under the "TR" on the sticker you would have the larger 4R100.

I appreciate you checking. I do have the E40D tranny with the 5.4L. For 97 and 98 models, the 5.4L got you the E40D. I am not sure about the 99 models. I do know the 2000 5.4L comes with a beefed up version of the 4R70W tranny.

Thanks,

Jim

I've got about 200 miles on the new tranny fluid. Talk about a messy job. I used a dropcloth and managed to catch about 2/3 of the old fluid. FWIW, the old fluid looked pretty clean. The magnet in the drainpan also didn't look too bad. I refilled with 15 qts. of Mobil 1 Syn. ATF. It does seem to shift a little better. If anybody has any questions, let me know.

Hey Jim, what torque specs did you end up using? And do you think they would be the same for the 4R100? My new F250 SD has this one. One good thing about the 2000 4R100 is it has a tranny pan drain plug! I wish for your sake they had done this earlier in the series? Heck, they ought to do it in all tranny pans!

It was somewhere around 10 ft. pounds. I basically matched what they were torqued to from the factory. If I had used regular fluid (and planned on changing every 20 - 30K) I would have installed the B&M aftermarket pan which I assume has a drainplug. As it is, I don't plan on touching it for another 70K or so.

Yes, the B&M one I looked at had the drain plug. But it also was about 4 quarts more capacity and had aluminum fins for added cooling. I never got around to doing however.
