Red face V-8 5-speed clunk over bumps

I am getting a clunking noise when driving over a bump when the truck is out of gear(between gears). Anyone else getting the same thing? If so, has anyone gotten it checked out?

YES!

I get the same thing...when the clutch peddle is pressed, the tranny inards seem to rattle around when I go over bumps. The synchro doesn't seem to work into first either...almost to a stop light turns green, I try to get into first...it won't go in, grinds and buzzes my hand. Do you get that too? I'm taking it in soon.

I posted a topic on hydraulic clutches. I am having the same symptoms. I took it upon my self to bleed the system, and I got 1/4" of air and 1/2" of foam out of it. I think I have a leak. I am unaware of an adjustment, but any air in the lines will cause the same problem.

Dealer said NPF... Losers!

Any other info would be appreciated!

Crash: when you bleed the system, did you get a solid stream of fluid out? Meaning did you get past the air and foam? When you bleed it, you should have it set up so that if the hose tries to pull air back into itself, you have the hose into a jar of fluid and it pulls that instead of air. If you are still having problems, maybe you should get that truck in for service. Like you said, it could have a leak or something is broke.

Almost sounds like your clutch is not fully disengaged, worth seeing is there is an adjustment on it.

As far as the clunk when out of gear, the only thing I can think of is either U-Joints problems or the yoke having too much play. The driveshaft would not be under load in that situation.

Hope it's fixed soon. Good luck

I'll try to bleed my clutch too...I was thinking of doing it too. The rattling is definately coming from the trans/clutch not other driveline. Maybe the clutch plate is bouncing back and forth as the air in the system compresses...who knows...weird stuff anyway, I'll let you know

I've got the same problem. Rattles and clunks going over bumps or railroad tracks. I think my tranny is loose on the mounts. When I start out in first I can see the entire trannsmission/transfercase assembly move about 1/4". Really frustrating. Might just be moving from the slip yoke unbinding, though. Or it could be the clutch problem that you are describing......or it could be loose lug nuts. Or maybe I can blame it on my door skins cracking.

Sorry, got on a rant there. Even with all the "Problems" I still like my truck. I hope these noises don't turn into expensive fixes later on.

Tina,
I did a gravity bleed, and then a two man bleed, closing the bleeder on the down stroke. You do have the right idea. That's the best way for one person.

Hey, not only are you a rare breed, but extremely sharp too!!!!

Yes, I got past the foam, into clear fluid. the symptom went away TEMPORARILY.

Crash1, are you getting the rattle over bumps or hard shifting. Just wondering who else gets the rattle. If so did bleeding the system affect it?

i get the same symptoms with mine. clunks and rattles over bumps. also the first gear thing when barely moving. i thought about the clutch not being depressed so now i make sure my foot is all the way to the floor before shifting into first. still happens.
also shifting into any gear i get a rough shift at best, never nice and smooth like you would think a new truck should be.

Ahhh, smooth- like a new truck.

What a concept....

Well, the clunk I get is like I saw described. It is almost like the slave is being compressed. I don't know how else to describe it. I'll check to see what happens when out of gear.

The clunk/ rattle is there in neutral, but it doesn't happen very often. This one may turn out
to be hard to duplicate.

Cool

Right it only happens when in neutral. But as someone else stated it sonds as if the trasmission is loose, or the transfer case one of the two. Any help would be greatly appreiciated.

I was able to duplicate the problem on "washboard" bumps. I was in third, clutch engaged, brakes applied. You guys are right, it feels like like the guts are going to fall out!
