Post Tranny I.D.

Does anyone know how to distinguish between the various manual tranny's on Fords from the 80's and early 90's? I need to know how to tell by looking. I know about I.D. tags and the codes on the trucks, but I need to know this for tranny's that are not in trucks. Mainly, I want to be able to tell the diff between NP 435, T-18, T-19, and TOD. Also, the diff between the M5OD and the ZF S5-42. Anyone know the ratio's for the 435, T-18, T-19, and the ZF S5-42? Any answers will be greatly appreciated. I am looking to do a swap in the near future. Thanks

I was on the Ranger site awhile ago (the one linked to from this site) and was searching the message boards for transmission info. I think I searched for 'tran'. One of the messages posted a link to a really cool page that had pictures and descriptions of the various Ford trannies, including what vehicles & years they were used, as well as comments about reliability, etc... They even had links to blow up diagrams. Sorry, I didn't book mark it and I don't remember the company name, but you may be able to find it if you spend some time searching.

On the older transmissions, there was always a casting with the i.d. on it; i.e., W.G. T-18, N.P. 435, etc. I really haven't paid any attention to my Mazda transmission.

Sadly, neither has Ford.

Check Advance Adapters ( http://www.advanceadapters.com/ ) I know their print catalog has a chart showing the ratios for many different transmisions. It also contains lots of ID info.
