Post Where did you tap in for the tranny temp sensor?

I just got my tranny temp gauge (and water temp gauge), it's an Autometer #4351. I was wondering, for those who have installed one... Where did you tap in to hook up the gauge?

The business end of the gauge has a copper sensor that is about 1.5" long by about 1/3" in diameter. It has a 1/2" NPT mounting nut (whatever NPT is), is this what I use? Does is screw in somewhere?

I appreciate any help I can get, thanks in advance...

The best place is the outlet side tube going to the cooler/radiator. You have to T off it to get the connection. Otherwise you can have it installed (welded bushing) on the pan.

Good Luck

Corey, I purchased an electric gauge from Banks. It has the 1.5" copper probe and screws into the transmisson where you simply have to screw out the "sender plug". I had to go to the dealer to see a picture of exactly where this plug was and went home and inserted it where Ford indicated and works great! Put some teflon tape around the sender fitting before you screw it in and you shouldn't have any leaks.

I opted for an electric gauge - I know some do prefer mechanical.

Good luck!

Save us all the trip to the dealer. Where on the transmission is the plug?

Thanks in advance.

Look at this picture and you can see the test ports for the pressures and all. They are the plugs I think F250Nut is talking about. The arrows depict where the fluid return line is for the cooler. AODE is 4R70W also.

This has some good info, but not all is perfect.

Thanks Birdman.
I've got the 4R100, but it appears to be in the same location as this (drivers side).

Which one of these two plugs in the picture did you remove to use for the Temp sensor? i.e. Which one is the "sender" plug? Is the banks unit exactly the same size as the plug hole and therefore ordered vehicle specific?

There's only one on the 4R100. The Banks unit bolts/screws directly into it.

I think I was unclear. The two locations with the arrows are already in use on the 4R70W for the cooler lines, tubes are attached. The picture is used to show that early AOD trannys had reversed flow.

The small black plugs to the left and lower down are 1/8"-27 npt pipe fittings for testing line pressures. Seems they would be the place to put a temp sender. You would need to use a bushing to go to the pipe fitting size supplied by the sender.

Sorry if I was unclear.

I see what you mean but it would seem difficult to go into a 1/8 inch hole with a 1/2 inch fitting of the banks unit or Corey's 1/3 inch probe on his Autometer one. I am asssuming the Banks sender might even be too big to fit into the hole even if you adapted upward to 1/2 inch? Corey's sure is. Does anyone know if there is a unit built to this 1/8-27 size at the sender to take advantage of these existing holes on the 4R70W? Man, that would be too sweet! Sounds like the 4R100 was easier to do huh?

There are standard pipe adapters for this application, brass ones from Home Depot or others will work. You may need to put an elbow on though to get the clearance.
Maybe an 1/8"MPT to 1/8"FPT 90° elbow and a 1/8"-X/X" adapter. Use Teflon tape on the threads but start it about 2 threads in so anything that might shed won't end up in the oil.

Remember to not overtighten since aluminum is soft.

Indeed, the install on the 4R100 was simple and quick. Before I did anything, I called he boys at: http://www.galebanks.com/GBhome.html
1-800-GET-POWER and spoke several times before I got things straight - but after that, it was pretty simple.

Question

Is the E4OD trans the same? I've been thinking of adding one myself.

Iggy, the E4OD is not the same, but similiar enough. My father has a 1994 F250 460 E4OD, and installed the gauge himself. His E4OD has the plug in the same general location as the 4R70W / 4R100. I'd suggest if you don't see yours by visual inspection first, then go to your dealer and have them show you a pic of the location. Mine was on the drivers side and once I knew that, I found the plug and the installation job was sweet and simple. Good luck!
