I assume the mileage was high enough to get them out of warrantee coverage.
I bought an extended warrantee on my new car and for less than your trans cost I got 5 year 100K miles bumper to bumper.
You may want to consider this on the new truck.
Also, if something just doesn't seem right out of the box new, get it in and document the problem. Even if they don't fix it right away, you pester them and they see you enough they will do something.

Your failure problem sounds unique but the Ford support is same old.

Good Luck

Do you know a lot about warranties? I am leasing my 98 F150 and the lease is up in June. I will have had it for 2 and 1/2 years in June. I am considering just purchasing it in June but I am unknowledgeable on warranties and I know that Ford will try to sell me a warranty and really, I've been told that if I purchase a warranty, it will never be like the factory warranty and will probably not even cover things that may break. Any suggestions or direction?

Warrantees.
I bought my last vehicle through my credit union that had set up a deal with an extended warrantee company that offered an extension of the factory warrantee. Covers all things except consumables, pads, fluid etc. Check around, the dealer gets a cut of the extended warrantee, but often youcan by one on your own. I'll try to look up the company name we got. My older car had one from Horizon insurance but wasn't as inclusive, ignition switch wasn't covered at about $150. Nor were door trim or gaskets, things that wear out quick.

Look around on the net too, many have websites that give the coverage limits.
