Double Bump?
A buddy of mine has a 98 F150 with a four speed auto (I think it is a 4r70w). Anyway, he doesn't have an internet connection so he ask me to post this question for him. I have really talked you guys up so...
He says that there is a double bump in his tranny. When you put it in reverse it bumps twice before it is full engaged. My E40d doesn't do it. He says that transmissions shops have diagnosed this problem on another vehicle of his. Is it a problem? Do any of you know if this is normal for a 4r70w? How about trannys in general?

I have the e4od and I just noticed that mine does that. It has always been alittle clunky when engaging in reverse. Today, well yesterday since it is 12:15 a.m. I sat in the parking lot and went from forward to reverse many times. When shifting into forward it is as smooth as can be, but when putting it in reverse I do get the "double clunk". I don't know what it is but if he finds out post it and I will do the same.

Sounds to me you have the same problem as i do? mine is a 4 W/D though i posted here a while back on this problem and a guy told me that his was doing it when you put it in reverse, it made a clunking noise! he said the dealer replaced the slip yoke on the driveline and it took care of his problem he said they was a TSB bulletien on the slip yoke! and his was replaced under warranty i am not so lucky my warranty is out and have kept putting it off replacing it. i am afraid to find out how much it is going to cost me? mine is a 4r70w tranny. and have checked it! ask your buddy to get under his truck and grab a hold of the driveline where it goes in to the tranny or the (transfer case if its a 4 wheel drive) and move it up and down if there is any movement it is probally the slip yoke woreout mine is sloppy i have checked others and they dont do it! also any body no how a tsb bulletien works when they issue one does it allow you to get that part any cheaper or what?
FORD-TOUGH 1 do you know if your slip yoke were it goes into the rear of transfer case has any up and down movement in it since they replaced it with a new one mine is pretty loose i checked a few others they didnt do this KEEP ON TRUCKIN!
F-trucks, No mine doesn't move up and down.
kkirt1, I went to the dealer today and they say it is normal, that some do this. They hooked it up to the computer and didn't find anything. Have you heard anything.

No, my buddy is lazy, he hasn't taken it back to the dealer yet. The last time he took it in they said the same thing - normal! I'll let you know if I hear anything.

If there is, in fact, a TSB on this, then the dealer cannot get away with a "NPF". Take the advisor (better yet, the tech) for a drive, and duplicate it for him.
TSB's will allow replacement if your truck is under warranty (3/36 or ESP). If it is not, the job becomes customer pay. You will receive no discount. I recommend REALLY getting to know the parts guy. He can make you or break you (based on experience).
Recalls are a different story. Remember the ignition switch recall? These are safety issues, and must be addressed regardless of mileage and coverage. No charge, of course.

I did let a tech ride with me and he said something was wrong. When I went to pick up my truck, I asked the foreman what they had found and he said it was normal. I also pointed out the pop that I get when I go off-road. The foreman said it was the nerf bars. I said "well then I will take them off" And after I told him this he said they all do this when you take them off-road. What a joke! I will be calling ford customer assistance next week to see if I can get anything out of them.
