Question Has anyone ever seen this???

Hi,
A friend of mine has a '97 F150 with the 4.6.
The light on the shifter that comes on when you disengage the overdrive (OFF) is flashing on and off...??? He says it only happens after the truck has warmed up... Does anyone have any ideas what causes this??? He checked the fluid and it's ok... He also says that while the light is flashing the transmission clunks as it downshifts...

Thanks
Mike

Im not sure about the newer F-150's but mine continueously did that on my 93, and I took it in, and they found that the lights and module inside the shifter was bad. Got a new one for 13 bucks

MikeS: Have your friend go to a Ford dealer and have the code scanner read what the problem with his transmission is. This is how the tranny "tells" you that some malfunction has set the light off. The O/D Off light becomes the tranny MIL (Malfunction Indicator Light) when it pulses. A code has been sent to the computer, get it read soon to prevent damage. j.b.

Thanks guys,
That's what I told him to do too. I guess he wanted to know what it was so he could tell if the dealer was trying to take him for a ride...He asked me, I didn't know, So I told him I'd check here for him...

Thanks
Mike

Had the same problem with my 97. Ended up being water getting in the transfer case causing the speedometer drive gear to swell. Eventually the speedo will probably quit. Ford has a redesigned breather and speedo gear. Also there is a TSB on this. I will find the number and post it on 11/19. Ask your friend if his windshield wipers work correctly, believe it or not this will affect the wipers.

94Fan,
How did you figure out what the problem was??? Did the computer "code" it out or did the speedo quit?? The wipers???? That's wild!!! What the h*ll would the wipers have to do with it???

Thanks for your help

Mike S, I had a code for vehicle speed sensor. Local ford dealer replaced the drive gear but did not replace the breather. 3 months later o/d light started flashing again. I have a friend in another Ford dealer and he made copies of all TSBS that related to this problem. TSB 97-11-19 is the one that addresses this problem. This may be a different problem than your friends, hope this helps. As for the wipers, the transfer case mode switch must get water in it causing it to short, affecting intermittent wipers and 4x4 range light to light dimly. If you cannot get a copy of this TSB let me know and I will get it to you.

My friends 97 F-250LD flashed like that and it was the speed sensor on the transmission, not the speedo gear.
He replaced it himself for less that $40.
The dealer told him what the problem was just from the description he gave.

94fan,
He had the computer checked today...It sounds like the same problem... He said it also coded out a problem with the wipers... If you could send me a copy of that TSB it would help like hell...

Thanks
