Post 5 Speed Shifter *****

My next truck project is to dress up the interior of my truck. One thing is the 5 speed shifter ****. Does anyone know of any place/website that carries some decent looking shifter *****? Also, has anyone taken the factory one off? I took a quick look at it today but didn't get into it. Is it hard to do?

Thanks,
Mike

I want to get a new one for mine, too. I knicked with something and tore a big chunk out of the top. I tried to twist it off, but it wouldn't budge. I'm not sure if it even comes off that way. If you find out how to get it off, let me know. If you're interested in selling it, I'll be more than happy to take it off your hands. As far as who makes new ones, I can't help you.

The shifter ***** are glued on and fit like the plastic covers on pliers handles. I have had mine off just pull up very hard and work it back and forth. I have not had any luck with finding an aftermarket piece. An idea though, is to remove the handle and thread the end of the shifter so the aftermarket ones will work.

Cool

The plastic shifter **** is pressed onto the knurled end of the gear shift, you can pull it off by pulling straight back. I have made an aluminum(you can blacken it to match gear shift using gunsmiths' blackening fluid) extension about 7" long with a 45 degree kink in it so that **** is higher and does not hit the cheap plastic console (or edge of seat) sitting on top of the bench seat. (I know, I need captains chairs.) For you older guys it reminds me of the BiG Daddy Roth model cars. Anyway the **** will pull off. You could make sleeve that can fit over the gear shift then have other end tutnrd down to fit the shift **** of choice. I made my prototype of extension from a piece of plastic grey PVC electrical conduit 45 elbow. It cost .97 and is more than strong enough;I reamed out one end to match gear shift dia, took Brass close pipe nipple and threaded into other end. Used belt sander to knock majority of threads off other end and inserted into the plastic shift ****, secured Elbow to gear shift by hose clamp on proto. On aluminum extension I use two piece split apart set collar, found at ny bearing house.
Maybe I should market these!

Damn, that sounds great ShotgunBob. That's what I may end up doing...fabricating my own. One of those pistol grip shifters off of the old Mopars would look and feel great on these trucks. I always liked them...I may have to try this. Thanks for the homemade idea!

DU302. I changed out my shifter **** and it was pretty simple. I took a 12" cresent and
adjusted it to fit under the ****. take a hammer and tap the **** off. The shifter is splined and the o.d. is approx 5/8".

Purchased a Hurst white shifter ball, removed the brass threaded insert, drilled the hole larger and deeper and appliied some adhesive and tapped the ball onto the shifter. I've had the **** installed for about 4 months without a problem.

If I were you I would thread the shifter and tap the ****. this would be a lot cleaner.

I've got a pretty good story about my shifter ****. It wasn't too hard to get off. One time when I was in a hurry to get going, I slammed it from 1st to 2nd and threw the **** right out the rear slider.

DU302. The white ball looks great!. You mentioned a stainless steel ball. I know you can buy chrome but stainless?. How big a ball do you want?.

A friend some years back had a hand grenade chromed and He used it for a shifter handle, I though that was pretty different.

Henry...my preference would be for a larger ball. I hate to say it, but the size of the ones on the newer camaro six speeds are awesome...I like that size. I like the billet one in the 35th anniversary mustang. I meant to say billet, not stainless, sorry. I'd just buy that one and adapt it but I want one that is bigger. Any clue at all as to where I might find something like this?

DU302. Hurst makes a large black shifter ball that's the same as the camaro. They also make a nascar fiftieth anniversary
****.

I had a MOMO shift **** on my 97. I had the factory one pulled off and installed the MOMO in seconds. It never slipped or moved in any way. I bought a black leather one that matched the leather steering wheel I installed on the truck. I was very happy with the result and it looked as if it came from the factory
