Where does your clutch let out?
To all Gear Jammers!
I just want to know where all the other trucks that have a manual tranny where their clutches grap a hold at? Mine grabs almost all the way out. It has bugged me ever since I purchased the truck. I like it to grab about 3" off the floor like my old 90 XLT did. Another thing that bugs me is hard shifts when I try chirp 2nd gear the darn clutch chirps instead of the tires most of the time. Just wondered if it was just my truck or all of them.
Thanks a ton Sugarman

Sugarman....mine is the same way. My clutch grabs right at the end. It has bugged me too since I'm easy on the clutch, in my opinion that is. I'm hoping to get 60 to 70k out of mine, is that realistic? I've never owned a stick before that I've had around for a while.

DU302,
My old 90 F-150 XLT Lariat had the 4.9 and a manual it had 90,000 on it when I flipped it and totalled it. It also had 33" tires on it and the clutch worked fine through all the late night beer drinking mud hole swamping excursions, not to mention pulling shovies and yotas out of the muck! Don't get me wrong I have had to be pulled out a few time by the little yotas hurt my my pride a lot but they would turn around and try to go through it and get stuck too though. Any way I bought the truck back off the insurance co. and me and my little bro is restoring it for him which is almost completed, I may have to trade him back when we get done!..... NNNNNAAAAAAAAHHHHHh.lol I like my 99 I just need to get a body lift and 35" thornbirds under there

Dunno about Ford clutch but heres my 2cents.
Had a 83 Chevette and had to change the clutch at 50,000 and 80,000 had it till I sold it with 96,000, bought with 40,000 and the clutch was changed before I bought it sometime.
Thats 4 Clutches.
On my 92 Nissan I had 106000 miles on the original clutch and no signs of slippage when I sold it.
From what I have read on the board the clutch for the F150 is undersized and this accounts for much reduced towing capacity of the manual tranny.
Ford get it together and put the clutch out of the superduty in the F150!

The clutch is designed to work in the upper half of it's travel, that way you don't have to push the pedal to the floor to disengage it. The idea is the shorter the travel the quicker and smoother the shift. My '83 GT had a truck clutch in it and the self adjuster kept it right where it liked it, about 3 inches of travel. The clutch lasted until I sold it, 15 years and 170K miles later; it had a little chatter but never slipped.
After hearing the new owner drive it, it probably lasted another 30 days and blew either the clutch or the engine.

sugarman,
Say a prayer for your clutch. It is in its final stages of life. If it chirps and not the tires then it is doomed. Ford goofed with the F-150 and the M5OD tranny. It is a Mazda little truck tranny and it is the pits. If only Ford had put the SD tranny in the 150s...
It needs a lower first gear and a larger clutch, bigger bearings and so on and so on...
Regards
Jean Marc Chartier
PS. on my 97 it lasted the duration of the lease but it was starting to slip.
