Question transmission clunk

I have a 98 F-150 (27,000 miles) and when I slow down to 30-40MPH and then speed up I hear a clunking noise. I've read some earlier posts on this and see that a lot of people are experiencing this problem but seems like its mostly in the 4 wheel drives. Mine is a 2 wheel drive automatic. Seems like the more I drive it the worse it gets. Is there anyone with a 2 wheel drive who has the same problem as well? Is this causing any damage by it doing this? The Ford dealer says that this is normal and that the noise is from the differential and that its normal for it to have a little bit of play in it. I trust the Ford service people about as far as I can throw them.

I have the same problem and mine will also do it around slow corners and then abrupt acceleration. It sounds like the u-joint. My dealers MEGA-SUCK so I haven't taken it in yet. I also have a 2 wheel drive.

My dads 97 f-150 2 wheel drive clunks when you shift it into reverse from park. I think it might be a u-joint the dealer said it was fine. They had it for 2 days checking it out. It still does it. My 99 is a manual. No problems with it yet.

Thumbs down

Well, If you can find the "Clunck on stopping" thread, you can see my whole history. Ford spent a lot of $$$ and MY time trying things and finally have said that it's a normal noise! My truck cluncks on a downshift at 22 MPH. It also has a clunck as you drive. I am soooo discusted with the dealerships and Ford for their lack od assisstance. Unfortunately, I am a very Loyal Ford customer. I am ready to abandon the f150/LD250 line and get a superduty. It runs fine, but I am concerned with the long hall. I hope you have better luck than me!

Hey,
I've got the same problem. I climb those smoky mountain roads between NC and TN and I push it pretty hard. I just assumed I had caused it. Figured I'd wait and see if it came up on the bulletin board. Lo and Behold here we are. What to do next? I basically was gonna drive the S##t out of it 'till something blew up 'cuz I hate being told by dealerships "there is nothing wrong with your truck"! If someone doesn't figure it out and my warranty runs short, I'll start the ordeal it's going to be to get it fixed.

Mark
