Question TRANSMISSIONS

I think this is a great way to get solutions to some major problems that Ford owners have. I have a 1997 F150 2wd with 52,000 miles on it. Recently while on the Belway my overdrive stopped functioning. All of the forward gears work except the overdrive. The transmission has been serviced as required. I can't get an appointment until 8/30/99 to have a specialist look at the trans to determine what the problem is. I have been to the dealer and they indicate that there is no problem in running the vehicle in overdrive off. Does anyone have any idea what the problem is? I love my truck with out the overdrive it's a pain.

barnoc- Sounds like the same problem that Ford just repaired under warranty last week for us. I was driving home from work when the tranny suddenly shifted out of overdrive and then violently back in and out 3 or 4 times. The "off" light on the shifter blinked on and off and I lost overdrive. Ford dealer had a code retrieved from the computer that pointed to the torque converter control switch which is located inside the pan. They fixed it after a day's wait for the part, and so far it works OK..even fixed the pinion shaft seal on the rear end and lubed the driveshaft splines. Fairly good dealer here. j.b.
