trans/clutch problem
I have an 89 Bronco II with over 150k on the original clutch. Great Truck! It is smoother than my 97 F150???
There is definitely something up with the new clutches and slave cylinders. I am just surprised that Ford isn't doing anything permeant to fix the problem. The dealers love the problem! It is an extra $700 every 12k miles in there pocket. Ford need to address it and correct it. I encourage writing to Ford in effort to have them prioritize the problem. I am in the process of documenting all of the hassles to date that I have been through and sending it off. I think at this point most of the problems will be out of warranty and we will get stuck with a poorly manufactured part. Even worse is it very expensive to service.

guys, I've been reading else where that Ford has what they call a "friction modifier" that I think is put into the transmission to smooth out this shifting problem. (I found this info on the F150 discussion list) Try asking the ford service managers about it.
I have the same problem with my 99. It doesn't shift smoothly in to 2nd, and it squeaks when shifting in to 3rd. I also just noticed that when ever you push the clutch pedal in, there is a squeaking noise coming from it. The truck is scheduled to go in to the shop on Wed morning. I'll let you all know what I find out.

Well, I dropped the truck off this morning at the dealers service center to have them look at it. As, it turned out, I got a call later on during the day from my service adviser saying that there is diffently something wrong with the tranny
, but didn't know for sure until they take the tranny out. They wouldn't give me a fix date until they find out what is exactly wrong. So, I ended up with a little escort to drive until its fixed. Does anyone have any ideas as to how long it could take? I'm missing my truck already.

Hey everyone, Been there and done that! I bought a 1995 F150 4.9L 5spd in July of 1997 with only 80k on it. I was driving on St Rt 50 in Ross county Ohio and was preparing to come to a stop using the down shift method, from 4th to 3rd, that is when the trany locked up tight.Me and my boy and that truck were in a slight skid, I shoved the clutch in to maintain control of the truck. We made our turn and that's where she sat until the dealer towed it back to the garage. The Tech that did the work said that the synchronizers in these Jap trany's DO NOT have a positive stop on the shift rail which allows the synchronizers to lightly touch the gear almost constantly causing it to fail early, even quicker if you like to use the shifter as an armrest. Just try pushing on your stick a little towards the gear your in and you'll feel what I mean. It is a sort of light grinding uncomfortable feeling.
The total bill for the repair came to $1200 and I had to wait 10 days for the parts and 3 more days for the repair to be completed, but the wait on the parts was due to the UPS strike that year.
The sad part is mine is starting to go again and I have absolutely no recourse because the warranty is long gone.
The 5spd trany that is in 1988-98 Bronco, E&F150/350 is a Toyo Koygo Mazda.
I am currently looking for the Warner T18 Ford & Industrial Trany that was used in the F150's up until 87.This trany has a granny low 1st and a PTO hookup on the side, sounds awesome.
