overdrive "OFF" light
A few times now as I have been leaving work in the morning I pull out onto the road and my trans. shifts really hard. Then my OD "off" light starts to BLINK. then it will shift in and out of gears and some times I think into nutural, and then back into a gear but really hard!! I can't figure out what it is but leaving work is the only time it has done it? Can anyone help me with this?
Fordluver,
It doesn't sound normal at all, if you have any warranty left, I would take it in and have it looked at. I have just one question though- Do you park next to another Ford Truck at work? If so, then maybe your truck is in LOVE!!! Just a little humor about your truck only doing it when you leave work.

The Overdrive light also serves the same function for the transmission as the Check Engine light does for the engine. If it just came on though, one would just think their OD was off, so it blinks to get your attention that something is wrong. Look under Instrumentation/Tranmission Control Indicator Light(TCIL)in the F150 Owners Guide. Our 95' Windstar had this problem. The transmission has 13 sensors on it and I've replaced one of them twice. I also had the blinking OD light occur intermittently and it's very frustrating. I drove around for two weeks with a recorder the dealer installed to the computer to trap the codes explaining what was wrong.
The sensor cost $29.00 but, I couldn't slap it on myself. It has to be programmed $165.00.

My friend with the 97 F-250LD 5.4 with E40D had that problem and replaced the speed sensor that goes from the trans to the speedometor.

Fordluver, right out of my manual:
WARNING: A flashing Overdrive OFF light indicates a system malfunction, dealer inspection required.
