clunk during turn

Around 5K miles my Screw started making a clunk/shudder from what sounds like the front left suspension area. The clunk would occur usually on right hand turns, while slowing to 5 to 15 mph and then accelerating. You could also feel it. I complained to the dealer, they couldn't find anything. Mechanic took it for a test drive, and of course the Screw didn't act up.

I took it back and this time every right hand turn off the gas and back on, speeds around 10 mph, the clunk/jolt would occur. Dealer is going to add a friction modifier to the rear end.

Sounds bogus to me, but does anyone have any expericence/suggestions with this problem.

Thanks!

I have the same problems with my 2001 Screw 4X4.
It happens when I slow down and excell around 10 - 15 mph and as well as on turns left or right it does it on both sides.
I took the vehicle first time to the dealer at 250 miles they were able to hear the noice and they change the Trans pump torque converter and all the filters. Problem went away for two months and came back again.
I took it in for the second time and this time they told me most likely was coming from the rear end and they took the rear end a part and they replace the clutch packs and said that the overdrive shims were worn new shims were .85 old shims were .040. But this did not fix the problem at all, right after I got the truck back the noise was still there.
I took it in for the third time and they told me that they can not do anything else then after calling them 5 more times they said they are going to replace the transmission, so I brought the truck back to them and they replace the transmission and guess what damn truck was still making the clunk noise, first it was not as loud as it was but in couple weeks it came back to the same point as it was and I still have the noise almost everytime I turn left or right and sometimes when I slow down then excell.
Now I am at the point fighting with the FORD. They told me that this was a know issue on the F150 Screw 4X4 lariats and it was normal to hear those noises, which I am not buying. I have been calling time for almost 4 months now and I do not have any results yet.
I just called them back again and ask them to solve this issue for once or trade them vehicle at no coast.
I am not sure what they are going to do but I hope they will do something to get rid of this thing, because I am tired of driving this crap like this. Now I am waiting on their respond. I will let you all know what happens next.
Wish me luck. I think I am gona need it.

I had the same problem. When cornering, i would get what felt like a bumping in the steering wheel (seemed to be coming from the front left suspension). It seemed to get worse when I was turning and braking at the same time (could feel the thump in the brake pedal also). Took my truck to the dealer yesterday and they replaced the steering shaft. So far, it hasn't started thumping and the steering seems quite a bit firmer. Hopefully that helps.

I have the exact same bumping, clunking in mine too and as you said it may be a little more apparent when braking. I thoght it was one of my new hub bearings or a cv going out. I then had a Ford tech drive it for another problem I was having and he noticed it before I ever said anything about it. He said it felt like the lower steering shaft was worn slightly or he said it could be a very slightly worn cv shaft but it might take a year for it to get any worse.

Anyways what did it cost you to replace the steering shaft? I want to know parts and labor if possible.

KYFordFreak,

The dealer replaced the shaft under warranty (26K miles). I had the clunking for about 5-600 miles before I could get the truck in for repairs. It didn't seem to be getting any worse as time went on. It didn't seem to clunk when I was going straight either, just in the corners. The part they replaced was the shaft that runs from the steering box to the firewall/steering wheel (it has a boot covered joint in the middle of the shaft). It took them less than an hour to do the repair ($70/hr labor if they would have charged me). Hope that helps.

Thanks for the info. Ford tech told me about the same, 1 hr labor at $65 and parts was about $100. So for 200 I can fix that, but there are other problems I want fixed first. I wonder how hard it is to change, can't be too bad if they do it in an hour, I figure maybe 3 for me to do it.

Troyk,
What I ment on my post for the known issues that I have been told by Ford, the clunking noise was a known issue not the warn shims. Actualy they said this was caractristic of the SCrew 4X4 lariats, so they are saying we know about it but we won't do anything about it. I spoke to 6 Ford reps from the support center they all said the same thing.

Well, here is an update. Ford called and told me that they are sending a Ford rep to talk to me about it, they are suppouse to setup a apointment and let me know for a test drive and they said I would be able to discuss any trade options with this person if that's what it comes down to, so I am waiting for my apointment, will see what happens.
Did anyone had to go throught with this, any heads up would be nice.
Thanks guys.

Clunk/jolt from front left?

I started the thread a while back here we are a few weeks later and I still have the same problem. The Ford Service guys have went through the truck front to back and are scratching their heads. I have an appointment this week with a Ford "engineer" at the Ford Dealer. During the last two weeks my Screw has been in the shop 6 days.

It is almost as if the truck's transmission has a problem while shifting from 2nd to first and then back to 2nd as a result of accelerating. The sound/jolt is much more noticable while accelerating out of a corner, especially a right hand corner.

If it can't be fixed, I'll look into a replacement, possibly using California's lemon law.

Has anyone gotten this issue resolved with FORD? I am having the same problem on my 2001 4x4 SuperCrew. I have had it back to the dealer 4 times so far. They have no clue what the problem is and they are now just starting to replace things hoping to fix it. I was thinking about calling FORD and threatening them with the Mass. Lemon Law.

I thought I was the only one having this problem until I starting reading this website. Seems like all kinds of people are having the same problem.

Mines not fixed yet. Part of my problems were realted t obad balljoints. I have since fixed those but the clunk/bump when turning is still there. I am thinking it is wither a bad cv joint, idler, or the steering shaft. It usually never makes a bit of noise which would mean you could rule out the cv maybe. It does OK going straight, sometimes can feel somethg that feels like a tire out of balance which brings the cv joint idea back into play.
My main culpurt is still that steering linkage, I gotta do something soon, it's driving me nuts. I guess I have to let Ford look at it as soon as I have the money.

After all this time I finally got the Ford Dealer rep. to come down to the dealer ship and take a look at the truck. After driving with them on my truck they heard the clunk noise on turns and told me that this is a caractristic noise on the truck and we know about it and they follow with; there is no known fix at the time and we can not do anything about it. Basicly they said that I am on my own. They are telling me the Ford won't look at this problem until they receive enough complains from customers which is a sorry *** solution if you ask me. Well in the mean time if anyone of you out there have the same problem and if you get it fix please let me know would you, this noise driving me crazy.

Thanks guys.
