Dang, you mean you actually read all my BS above. Man you need a big thanks just for that. It's not the best 92 I spent but it did net me a little bit better shifting and the shudder is down.

I didn't have them check out the steering shaft at this time. It was just a fact the tech mentioned on our test drive and he might not have even been right. You can feel a small bump/clunck when turning and that was his guess just drving it. I was thinking it might be one of the hub bearings I replaced last October is already shot. I might go ahead and put another one on under warranty, I can do one in about 2-3 hrs. He also said it might be very early stages of a cv shaft but nothing to worry about yet.
They didn't say a word about ball joints or other steering/suspension parts. I have heard the same about the OE units, but to my knowledge my truck still has OE with 136K on it. I have no other classic sypmtoms that it may be a balljoint or tie rod and I've had two alignments in the past 15K (one just 6K ago) and they never said a word about worn parts. I have just hand checked them myself and they seem OK.
My POA (plan of action) is to have a rotation and balance, new u-joints on rear shaft (no need on front since it doesn't turn in 2wd) and then go from there with cv shafts and/or a lower steering shaft. I will eventually find the problem and if not I will sell the stupid SOB. Thanks

Sometimes I wonder about OE tolerances. They sell so many of these trucks I guess a few parts just get "slapped" together... especially on Mondays and Friday's huh?! He he he.

I guess I can't complain to loudly. I bought this truck with 86K and no prior knowledge on how it was ran and serviced, I have since put 50K of hard earned ( mostly HWY) miles with little trouble. I agree OE tolerances are not what they should be. Of course if I and you built them they would cost like 50G's for a base model, but Oh what a truck it would be. Take care, thanks for all the help and I will probably still wind up using your ATF how-to in a month or two.
