FYI,Trans Fluid change Done

Completed my trans fluid/filter change yesterday at 26,500k miles, including TC. Pretty easy, but messy as all hell. I used a purolator filter and aamaco semi syn mercon V, not really the brand of fluid I wanted, it just worked out that way, it's manufactured by exxon/mobil corp. The filter doesn't fit too snug in there, but the factory one didn't either. It seems to shift a little smoother now.
If you've been putting it off you should go for it, it's easy, nessecary and your truck will love you for it:D

How did you drain the TC? Pull the cooling line and run the engine or pull the bolt off the TC. Thanks

p_ferlow 03-12-2002 10:30 AM

I pulled the bolt off the TC. Worked fine. Takes an hour to drain though.....drip...drip....drip.

That sums it up, TC drains pretty slow. P_Ferlow has a link to some really good directions, recommended reading before your change.

Yes I did read all the post and links. I was just wondering what the "field" operatives were doing. That to me is the real test!!

2fords 03-14-2002 04:18 PM

I know what you mean. Trust me, If I can manage to complete something, then's it's idiot proof;)

One more thing
Total cost: 12 qts fluid=$30, filter=$17.50

I highly doubt you could find a dealer to do it for less than $50
:D :D

Besides by doing myself I know I got a quality filter and more importantly I know Mercon V was put in.

how is it done

I'm at 30k and where are those directions that P ferlow mentioned. I've never attempted this but it would be good for me. Please tell me as soon as possible how it's done as I will be leaving in a few days. Thanks guys. Congrats. On doing your own job. I guess I'd be able to do it too! :D Dan

Dont forget the shift kit, the deep pan, and the synthetic oil....

Mind as well bulletproof it while you are there..by the way this is the vehicles weak point....

These are my instructions. Use at your own risk.

If you're a member (joining is free), www.f150world.com also has a good tutorial on the same procedure.

For $400 I'll do it, with Amsoil, filter and toss in a shift kit. :D

I could have swore at one time yo usiad you replaced your power steering fluid with Mobil 1 ATF, is this correct? I know the PS takes Dextron/Mercon but I wanted to know how the Mobil 1 worked in the PS and if it helped any. I hate search being down and I 'll keep looking bt I wanted to ask you also.
