Driveline vibrations
I own a 99 F150 Supercab 4x4, 4.6 V-8, 4 spd auto, 3.55's, short box. Purchased new in 9/99...has 61k miles now. Have had a driveline vibration for about a year now when speeds are between 60 to 80 mph in a "coasting "condition..ie, no load on the driveline. Its getting gradually worse. If accelerating, or slowing down, vibration goes away. Ford checked it while under warrantee, and low and behold, could not find a problem..does that surprise anyone ?? I've noticed some info in this forum about tailshaft seals, bearings, and out of balance drive shafts...could someone help me out ?? This is great vehicle, and other than the 4 wheel ABS brakes that suck completely, as this vibration,I've had no other problems. It gets better highway mpg (sometimes 19.5 in summer) than my girlfriends 4.0 V-6 Ranger..go figure that one out. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks
BRobie,
I had the same problem. The drive shaft is to small in diameter. Ford knows about this and finally fixed mine free even though I was out of warranty. They need to replace your drive shaft and extension housing on the tranny. There is a TSB on the problem under vibration, extension housing wear. I found it on this site under recalls and TSB. Good luck!

WarEagle,
Thanks for the info...this has had me puzzled for the last year or so...It felt like a driveshaft vibration, but I couldn't confirm with several trips to "mechanics"...I'll find the TSB and make a visit to friendly Ford dealer. Thanks again

WarEagle,
I have a copy of what may be the current TSB #99-26-2 issued 12/27/99 thanks to good friend in the car repair trade. It seems to supercede the last TSB #99-24-1 issued 11/29/99, which I found on this site. I have confirmed that my tranny is a 4R70W, but have some questions still. #99-26-2 is pretty specific..its for 98-99 F150 4x2 vehicles with 139" wheel base, and 4R70W...my truck is a 4x4...wondering if this TSB also covers 4x4's? It also says the existing driveshaft should be 4.5" diameter...(mine measures 3.5" diameter.)..and should be replaced with a 5" diameter shaft. What the heck is going on with that ??? I'm measuring the outside diameter of the driveshaft tube, and its 3.5". Then it goes on about how index marks need to be aligned on tailshaft, driveshaft, rearend, etc.
Anyway, I just want to make sure I have all my information straight when I try to get Ford to fix it for me. Sounds you have quite machine with all those aftermarket goodies..Is your rig a 4x2 or 4x4? How did you manage to get Ford to do the work after the warranty was up ?

BRobie,
I'm not sure if the TSB covers 4 wheel drive. Mine is 4X2. My drive shaft must be at least 5" in diameter so what you found out sounds right. It looks huge!. I raised so much hell about the poor service I was getting that a manager stepped in and took over. They originally kept my truck for a whole day, didn't even drive it and told me my tires were out of balance. When the manager rode with me he could easily see it wasn't the tires. I had been using the dealer for a while and spend some major $ servicing my wife's Explorer so he could see I was a good customer. Coupled with the TSB the service tech should have found he called Ford and had them cover the cost of the parts and he covered the labor. Good luck! Hopefully my sig will include a magnacharger soon.

WarEagle,
Thanks for all your help..This site has been great..lots of people willing to help out. Too bad Ford doesn't step up to plate on these issues before Owners get pissed...we all know vehicles are not perfect..its customer service that will keep us comin' back for next model, and the next. I took my rig in twice under warranty and they changed a U-joint and admitted it didn't solve the problem. So, I decided to drive it 'til it became obvious what the problem was. Have you had any trouble with ABS brakes or door cracks ??
