Better manual trans fluid?

I've got the manual trans in my 2001 F-150. It's got about 9,000 miles on it now. While the shifting is fine, I keep reading about problems encountered with this tranny. Is there a better fluid to run in the tranny that will make it shift better or last longer? I've heard good things about the Redline MTL (synthetic 75/80w). What does Ford recommend? I hope it's not the fish oil (80EP synthetic), that crap is $20 per quart from them. Has anybody changed to something that works?

Thanks,

Mitch

hello bronco . . glad your 5 speed is doing fine . . my 5 speed is doing well also . .

there are quite a few posts in the board about people changing to amsoil. some feel that their shifting improved. you might want to do a search or check archives.

Mitch,

If you do switch make sure you use ATF fluid.
Any good brand ATF synthetic will do just fine.
I went with the cheapest I could find locally. It happened to be Amsoil. Redline was a close second. Changing the oil will not harm your tranny but no one can guarantee that it will last longer.

The transmission requires Mercon ATF, Mercon5 is usually recommended.

I personally use Amsoil ATF. I highly recommend it!

i used redline D4 ATF, its an atf specifically made for manuals. it improved my shifting quite a bit, but it was $8 a quart (only 4 qts needed though). its mercon, so it wont void the warranty...

The above mentioned brands were tough to find here in Edm, so I went with 3.75qts of Mobil 1 Synth ATF.
