Transmission issues

2002 Ford F-150 4.6 supercab sport 2 wheel drive automatic. My father had died and I inherited his truck that’s really nice condition but the tranny seems to be having issues. When I drove it home it was making a bit of roaring noice when starting off and didn’t want to shift and wouldn’t go reverse. Seemed as if the sound was coming from the rear end but the symptoms leads me to think tranny. Now it won’t go into forwards gears and only reverse. I forget th codes I had gotten when checking with scanner. He bought the truck used and may have only put 6k miles on it. I don’t exactly have the money to fork out 1k-2k for tranny. Any ideas for the cause and if it’s repairable ?

Need the codes, but it sounds like it needs a full rebuild. Did you check the fluid level and see if it's dark or burnt?
