Trans or torque

2000 F150 4wd 4R70W transmission
While climbing a hill truck suddenly lost power could only climb the hill at 30mph. When tans geared down RPM went up but speed did not increase. Brief smell of burnt oil. Top of hill checked trans fluid level ...perfect and not real hot . On the next hill started making a rattling noise.Truck will move on level ground forwards and backwards but will not pull a hill. 3hrs later started the truck up put it in gear and it moves and the load rattling (like a jar full of pennies) was gone. Is this the transmission or torque converter?

catalytic converters are less than 2yrs old and have less than 10000 miles on them. Plus no O2 trouble codes
