Overdrive problem

Hello, this is my first post so bear with me. I have a 1997 F150 with 90K miles on it. My problem is that, this is weird, if I back out of a parking spot or driveway my transmission will not go into overdrive. If I just put it in drive and take off 9 out of 10 times it will go into overdrive. I have noticed if it does not go in OD after backing out I can stop and put it in park and then shift in drive and it will go into OD. I have looked in a lot of places and nowhere I can find anything to let me know what it could be. It is running smooth and shifts very well. Does anybody know what I can look for as the problem?

Thank you very much.

Maybe a wiring issue for the O/D button on the shift stalk? Are you able to twist the handle around?

No, it is pretty tight. The light does not come on when I press it though. The light on the instrment cluster does not come on either.

Hmm. I'd try popping it off and checking the switch and the wiring.
