I had my 1997 in 4wd and drove home. noticed a overheating smell, and when I got home took truck out of 4wd and it would mostly just sit and spin. when I put it back in 4wd the rear tires act like they want to outrun the front and truck slides to the side. any help would be appreciated

 

Were you driving on pavement with good traction in 4wd? If so, you probably damaged the transfer case. Take it to a driveline shop.
