95 f150 trans problem

Ok I have a 95 f150 with the 5.8 motor
transmission is automatic with overdrive - problem ... 3rd gear doesn't want to work .... can manually shift it from 1st to 2nd then when rpm is up to about 2500 shift to drive and it goes straight into overdrive and rides down the road no problem..... I want to fix the apparently lol.... will changing the shift solenoid in the transmission and replacing the trans filter fix that problem? Was told by a transmission shop that it most likely would but I don't want to spend the 350 plus dollars to let him do it for no reason

You'll need to know which transmission you have. You can have the E4OD or the 4R70. They're not close to the same. You can tell by looking at the bottom bolt pattern on the pan. The E4OD, at least mine, does not have a filter as such. It has a screen that acts like a filter. The price quoted doesn't seem right. Are you confident in the transmission shop that gave you the price?

With a 5.8 it's going to be a E4OD. The 4R70W was only used with a 5.0.
