99 F150 wont go into gear

The transmission on my 99 F150 will not go in gear anymore. For a long time it would slip or I would have to feather the gas to get it to go in but finally it wont do anything. My question is where to start. I have talked to several shops about getting a rebuild but they are all over the place between 1300 and 2000 and Im not even sure it will require a complete rebuild. I never heard any grinding or noises. Plus I will have to pay to get it towed to get inspected and estimate.
I guess I am just worried about getting hit for more than I actually need.
Thx

You need a new transmission. It will cost whatever it takes.

At this point, I would take it to a shop that only specializes in drive trains.

I've got on here where I live, and they do great work for a fraction of what the average shop will charge. They also rebuild and sell transmissions and converters on site. They have all the tooling and machinery necessary to do the job equal if not better than factory.

Plus they have knowledge and equipment to fully test transmissions before they are put into use. That is because they only do that type of work and not a Mr. Fix it all shop. I've seen them pop a transmission out and back into a Windstar in less than 3 hours. That's because they have the expertise and they spend their lives focusing on it.
