Can I swap a manual tranny to an automatic?

I'm 10 days out for a left hip replacement...rather than buy a new car or truck, it occurred to me maybe I can just have the local transmission guys put in an automatic transmission for my 2003 F150, so I can drive when healed up enough. No way I'll be able to drive a clutch for 7-9 weeks. Am I dreaming, or, is this viable, cost-wise? I would think it would run 4k or more?
Thanks
Calvin in Petaluma, CA

A good shop can do it, but it's quite involved. You need a transmission from the same drive system (2wd or 4wd), same engine (V-6 is different bolt pattern than V-8), a flex plate, some rewiring, a different ECU, and a shifter with linkage (column shift will require a different steering column and cluster so you can see the PRNDL). I don't know if a driveshaft mod will be needed if it's a 2wd or a transfer case mod if it's 4wd.

Probably will cost you more than the truck is worth.
