Does my truck have a shift kit or did i get F-ed over?

Just got my first F150. I was pretty thorough about the check i was there for a while checking everything I can think of before I got the truck. He said that the tranny and engine were both swapped out last year. He got both for a good deal at a local junk yard and he replaced the engine cause of a spun bearing and the tranny because 2nd gear was slipping. Well, I asked for the receipt and he didnt have it because the engine work he did himself which I could believe after talking to him he knew what he was talking about. He also builds boats so I dont doubt his ability to do it.
The tranny apparently was done by a place and they supposedly put in a shift kit and torque converter into the new tranny) I called the place they said that their standard service that they do is to install a shift kit and a new torque converter that's more powerful or whatever. Ok so it checks out.
The previous owner promised to get me the paper from the shop once they open on Monday so I bit the bullet and got the truck. (Far drive, getting late, checked it out for a long time)
A day later he calls me saying the shop told him that they dont have the receipt or record because he paid cash and it wasn't a full rebuild, only a shift kit+ torque converter.
I call the shop today and he says to call during business hours (tomorrow) and he'll check the records but when I asked him if there should be a record if he paid cash, he said yeah it shouldn't matter. Asked him if someone called about the truck I was referring to and he said no body.

So.. someone is lying or misinformed.

The only way to know for sure is to know by driving it and trying to deduce if there is indeed a shift kit in the truck because at the end of the day even if the shop says there's no record of the truck having work done, it becomes "he said she said" type of deal.

Do I have a shift kit in my transmission? Btw, it's a 1999 Ford F150 with 220k miles with supposed engine and tranny swap and should have 150k on it
Symptoms: Under hard acceleration from a stop, the RPM will go up to around 4000-5000 and it will shift HARD like clunk into gear and chirp the rear tires. It will chirp it pretty loud like you can definitely feel the shift and hear the chirp. This is from a 1-> 2 shift. Under hard acceleration from a roll it doesn't seem to clunk but is smoother. I'm not real heavy on the gas when I drive around so with smooth driving you dont too hard clunking.

He also said it has 4.56 gears so I am wondering if it's possible to see at what MPH it should be shifting into gear and whether it's slipping. How can I know if it's slipping or if it's just the shift kit doing it's job?
Does a shift kit change WHEN the car shifts? I was under the impression that because of the shift kit it is going up to the high RPM and HOLDING it there until it shifts hard into 2nd gear because it was good for towing.

Anyone know the answer to this?? God I'm going to be so pissed if I need a new tranny. The cars paint looks like **** too

your rear gears HAVE NOTHING TO DO WITH THE SHIFT POINTS...

#1 we some more information on the vehicle as we cannot see thru the internet nor can we drive the truck for you...

#2 if these issues were so prevelant why did you purchase the truck before verifying the "story"

Well #1. What info do you need? I never asked anyone to "drive my truck" over the internet but you're more than welcome to ask me to provide more info I will gladly do so. What exactly do you want to know?

#2 These issues were not prevalent when I purchased the truck it came after esp the verifying the story aspect of it. I checked everything and everything else he said checked out and it was the weekend and another person was going to buy the truck so I made the decision to take a leap of faith on the tranny. It's either a bad tranny or running great with a shift kit.

What things can I test to know if it's a shift kit inside?

does the transmission slip, or does it function as "normal" minus the firmer shifting? it sounds to me like the transmission "shop" did a half rebuild and the J-mod

now regading the gears, 4.56 with a stock tire is gonna run high RPMS on the highway but get on great around town or towing... I assume the speedometer is correct / has been corrected via tuning device or re-flash of the ECM??

I mean other than that you haven't given any information on the truck, so it might be best for you to post some pics...

It is the modifications to the 4R70W transmission outlined by Jerry, one of the Ford engineers that helped design the transmission.

Jerry actually updated the J-mod article for 2001 and newer transmissions for the Mercury Marauder guys, However these updated instructions apply to ANY vehicle equipped with the 4R70W/4R75E transmission;

"Ignore what the article says and do this...

Hole #2 is the intermediate clutch feed (1-2 shift). Make this hole in the .100"-.110" range. It should be .081" in your plate right now.
Hole #10 is the reverse clutch feed. Totally optional. If you want it to engage into reverse faster when you move the lever, open this up to .093".
Holes #4 & 5 are the direct clutch feed (2-3 shift). Open both of these holes up to .100"-.110".
Holes #9 and 11 are the forward clutch feed (4-3/4-2 shift). Make both of these .100-.110" as well.

So, it looks like you need a drill of around .100" and you should be good. When you open up holes 4&5 make sure the hole in the gasket between the
separator plate and valve body casting, is large enough. These holes are a little small.

-Jerry"
