rebuilt clutch

My transmission mechanic said the clutch the dealer installed in my truck 6 years ago was a re-manufactured clutch assembly, not new.Is it customary for a dealer to install a rebuilt clutch? The receipt doesn't say new or rebuilt, just that the clutch was replaced. I would think the dealer would put in all new parts. My mechanic also said the flywheel or pressure plate was not resurfaced. I don't remember which. Anyway, I've lost all respect for dealers. At least the one I used to go to.

The parts listed should state, reconditioned, new, etc. In regards to the quality of remanufactured clutch assemblies, nothing wrong with that as you typically get a very good quality parts, if doen local, usually better quality than oem. With regards to re-surfacing the flywheel, it is really only necessary is damage has been done to the flywheel, or clutch chatter, etc was an issue.

Thanks for the response. I feel a little more relieved knowing the rebuilt clutch is OK to install. The dealer still should have stated new or rebuilt on the invoice.

If you have been driving it for 6 years with no clutch issues, the dealer did a quality job.

The past three years the truck has been hard to shift. Some days I couldn't get it into first or reverse without turning off the engine.
Other days it shifted smooth as butter. Happens mostly at idle.
Lack of funds prevented getting it fixed earlier. The mechanic said the boot inside the truck was installed backwards and a couple of tranny bolts (maybe mounts?) were missing.

Why did you have the transmission looked at in the first place?

Red face

Because of the shifting problems mostly at idle. But this didn't happen every day which is the puzzling thing, however it generally happened in the morning before the truck warmed up. Sometimes I couldn't shift into reverse or first unless I turned off the engine.
The mechanic was sure it wasn't synchros or other gears, but rather the clutch assembly. So now that the new clutch is in, the truck shifts great.

More often than not, that's a sticky pilot bearing.
