shift kit and tranny fluid
shift kit and tranny fluid
This is on my 99 F150 4x4 XLT with the 5.4 automatic. Has Off road package and tow package.
Truck has about 160K miles.
I'm getting ready to drop the pan and replace the tranny filter along with the fluid. I'm also looking at possibly installing a Transgo shift kit. Not the calibration kit,but just their basic kit.
For fluid,I run mobile synthetic in everything and am pleased with it.
I've been reading about folks using Type F transmission fluid to give it a nicer shift. Anyone running a Type F tranny fluid vs the recommneded fluid? Also,is all Type F the same?
I dont have any tranny issues now, just would like a nice crisp shift and perhaps tire chirp when it shifts from 1st to 2nd etc at WOT. Not something I will be doing a lot,but just mentioned it as I've read a lof of users get that result with either the Type F fluid or shift kit.
I'm not sure if I have a drain bolt on the torque converter so what i might do is keep the older fluid in there and run Type F to fill the pan. Then it will mixwith the older fluid and add a little friction modifier.
If i have a drain bolt,I'd be replacing it all and at that point would I need to add a small bottle of modifier into the Type F if going that route?
Thanks,
ps: if you have any input or hints for the transgo shift kit, please post them too.

If this was my truck with that many miles, and not giving any problems, I would LEAVE IT ALONE. Drop the pan, change the filter and do a fluid EXCHANGE ONLY. Never put type F fluid in that trans, the clutches wont take it, it's for older transmissions. If you want to change that much with a good functioning trans....just go out and get a new rebuilt and do what you want to it. Don't try to radically change what is working properly now. It's your truck and your money, but that is what I would do.
Interesting both of said not to use a shift kit. I have always read that inatalling new springs and opening ip the holes in the valve body/plates actually helps the tranny life since it reduces clutch wear etc....
Ive always hear do the shift kits vs tuners.
Thanks for the opinions!.
Ps: i asked about Type F fluid as i recall members using B&M trick shift fluid and its Type F fluid just rebranded.

If you were to go with a shift kit go with a factory tech C plate and shift kit by Gregg Evans. You are correct of the fact that it reduces wear on clutches and will prolong tranny life. I have had a shift kit in mine for a VERY long time and it shifts no different then the the day I installed it. I say from personal experience.... go for it.The kit can be transfered to a new tranny when you get it. Life is short. why waste time...lol

The best fluid to use for the 4r70 4R70W and 4R100 is Motorcraft. That's right, go to your Ford dealer and get it. Now as for the shift kit. I'm going to tell you the exact opposite of every one so far. I replaced my valve body (basically a shift kit) and put in a competition one with 100k miles on my trans at the time. No issues what so ever with the trans. Now as for adjusting the line pressure in the tune to firm the shifts. I've been told by trans guys it's a bad idea due to the extra work your putting on the trans oil pump.
The best fluid for that transmission would be the Amsoil universal ATF by far!! Do the exchange method only, pan-filter,and in your case drain the TC. I have been running it since the last 30K miles....works great !

I'm thinking about possibly doing a shift kit for my 5.4l before I get my custom tunes. Does anybody have any opinions on this? My tranny has somewhat low miles, only 84000 and figured I'd flush the tranny and maybe do a different valve body. Any opinions?
A shift kit will remove alot of slip which save clutches amungst other stuff. To the other poster about the pump.. The pump puts out what it puts out. The shift kit lets less bypass and uses whats already there. My shift kit has been in since 03 and has never given me a problem. flushed everything every 30,000 miles. I use the Motorcraft tranny fluid and filters. The only thing I would add to the mix is a forced lube kit for the tail housing. The rear output bushing doesn't get enough fluid which is why there is alot of problems with driveline vibration... Tore up output shaft bushing. In a nutshell.. Do the mod yourself cause it's not that hard and Enjoy!!
