Blinking overdrive indicator on shifter.

I was coming down the interstate today running 75, and my overdrive light started blinking, so i pulled into a truck stop checked the tranny fluid, then added the needed amount, I figured that would fix it, no. I get back up to speed and it does it again. So I run it to my turn off, roughly 45 miles issue free, "light still blinking" and kill it to reset the PCM. It has done this before when I raced a buddy. Any ideas? It's a 1997 4.6, 4r70 3.55 4x4, with 265-75x16 tires.

You need to get the transmission codes read out. A standard OBD2 scanner can't do it, you need one that can read Ford transmission codes. If you disconnected the battery, the codes are gone.

Where would I get a tranny coad reader? Ford? I'm in no big hurry to fix it. I have not disconnected the battery, so they should still be there. No ideas glc?

Take it to a dealer or transmission shop or a shop that has a proper reader.

mine as well is intermitant, seems like if i run it hard for a long peroid of time day after day it will come on all the time, but dosent affect shifting patterns, if i leave the truck for the weekend and dont drive it, it can go days without coming on, tried everything except a code reader, i cant see it being very important since it dosent affect shifting patterns and goes out after u turn off the truck, a ford mystery i guess, lol

Check your plugs at the trans especially speed sensor for poor connection. See if the blinker goes away with a reset. Also code read if it comes back a blinker. It should/may be setting a code with intermittant engagement due to broke keeper in overdrive actuator.

Reading the codes is the FIRST thing you need to do when you get a blinking OD light.

I'm not in any way saying this is like your problem but my light was doing the same thing.I took it to the dealer and they had to replace a solenoid and wire harnass after dropping the pan. Good luck!
