Transmission Filter Question

I have a 2006 F150 with the 5.4. My trans code is Q, so that means I have the 4R75E right? I'm almost to 80,000 miles, and I'm fixing to get my fluid changed. I know, entire fluid exchange to get all 14 quarts out not just a flush. Anyway, I'm confused by what I find online about new filters. Can somebody give me a part number or something so I know I'm getting the correct transmission filter? Thanks

Go to your Ford dealer for this one. Put a drain in your Pan.

I thought draining the pan didn't get all the fluid out

I wouldn't worry about the filter, just get an exchange done.

I've heard some people say to change it and some say there's no need. Does it never need to be changed?

Mossy: If you have never done it before on this transmission? Here is what I did with my sons 08 the first wk after we brought it home.... In my mind it's the ideal thing to do for these transmissions... Just flush the fluid again after 40K miles of service it's so easy just replace the magnefine filter and flush old fluid out from same point as before... Takes about 30 min... With 2 people. If you use a regular ATF I would do your routine flush between 30k to 40K miles.... If you use a top quality Synthetic ATF you can go at least 50K to 60K... Maybe longer just depends on how hard the transmission is worked...

We replaced the factory old filter with a Wix #58955 $21.99 at Oreillys---> Perfect fit! His transmission is also Code Q 4R75E

After this you never really have to replace the pan filter again... as long as the magnefine filter is installed... and a transmission flush is made so easy...

My son's truck had 170K miles on it... when we brought it home... I dropped the pan and was supprised to see the yellow plug still there and the bottom of the pan almost spotless... The magnet had just a bit of shaving sludge attached to it... So I see no need to remove the pan again, until he has put another 100K miles on the truck... I did replace the old fluid with Amsoil ATF... Most of the miles on our 08 was highway-driving from Oklahoma to Houston every month...

All of this might be extreme, but I am very ****.... I do have an 01 F250 PowerStroke with this same setup and the stock transmission has over 340K miles on it... with alot of medium duty towing.... and still shifting like new...

I know this is alot more info then you ask for and I apologize! Once I get started I can't stop! My fault!

The pan filter is quite coarse - all it filters out is the big chunks.

You CAN, of course, drop the pan, replace the filter, THEN hook up the exchange machine.

I ordered amsoil ATF last night. I'm assuming nothing has been done to the transmission before. I got the truck with 50,000 miles. would that wix filter be better than getting a replacement from the dealership? And is that inline filter an add-on or does my transmission already have one?

You would get different opinions on the difference between the MC and Wix filters... I have always used Wix filters... Just my preference... Never an issue...

Watch the video of install... Took 10min to install the filter... If your truck has a transmission cooler? If not the filter is not an option, unless you splice into the hard lines which is much more difficult of an install...

Like I said above: This is my sons truck and he will be driving it back and forth to college for the next 4 to 6 yrs... So I am trying to help prolong the life of the transmission...

Jim did some testing on these small filters... IMHO these are a very good cheap investment...

Mossy: I know I'm probably making things more complicated then what should be... Just dropping the pan and replacing the 4 to 5 quarts really does no good... You need to get all 14qts out of there... and adding the magnefine filter is just a added benefit plus it makes the flush and future flushes so much easier... The choice is yours... One more note: If any members think I am miss leading Mossy? Please chime in with better info... I'm not a transmission tech! I just know what seems to make alot of good sense... Also I have read may articles and did a bit of research on the design of the magnefine filter and it in no shape or way effect line pressure...

When I cut one open years ago, it sure looked fine enough for me to want to change it, especially as I regularly drop the pan anyway for general inspection and magnet cleaning.

It's cheap insurance, and easy to do. Sorry - old school - I do not believe in 'lifetime' anything.

*EDIT* - when yer talkin' particle size in Microns, large is STILL very, very small....

Why reuse the gasket? The wix filter kit at O'Rielly is $22 and it comes with a new gasket. Should I not use that new gasket?

Where is the install video? Or do I just look it up on youtube? And the R516M filter in the link is the one I need? I do have a transmission cooler. It seems well worth $16 just for peace of ind if nothing else

You should ALWAYS reuse the factory pan gasket unless it's damaged - it's better than ANY aftermarket gasket.

Oh ok. I just won't use the one that comes in the Wix kit then. As far as I know, the pan has never been taken off, so there's no reason to believe there will be anything wrong with the factory gasket. Is that 5/16" magnifine filter in SyN's link the one I need?
