transmission not staying in gear

hey guys. never had a problem with my truck really until now. 2004 f150 screw fx4 with 124000 miles.

i was driving around my friends property today setting hog traps and having to use my 4x4 hi and low a bunch. anyway everything goes fine all day until were in the pasture about to leave when the check engine light and the little wrench logo come on and the truck acts like its in neutral all the sudden. so i put it in park. then put it in drive, reverse, neutral, 1st and second gear. none of them work. while the truck was just sitting there the speedometer said it was at like 10 mph until i put it in park and it would drop to zero. looked underneath and the drive shaft has what looks like shifted back a couple inches but is still attached.

i put it into 4x4 low and could feel the "clunk" of everything lining up and it would drive but didnt really want to leave 1st gear. when it would try and shift it would slip out and act like it was in neutral again. any theories?
