Angry Transmission shudder?

I own a 95' f150 4x4. The truck is used hard on a daily basis, but is maintained well. In overdrive around 1500-1800 rpm's the truck shudders ( almost feels like the tranny is slipping ) once above 1800, or if you drop out of overdrive it goes away. I have changed the tranny fluid and filter regularly, and the kicker is when you change the fluid and filter the problem goes away for a few months. Anyone know what gives? I have tried ford dealers and a few tranny shops and they all look at me like I have 5 heads...
Thanks for all the replies in advance

I am having the EXACT same problem. When under a load I dont feel anything abnormal. When cruising along and barely touching the accelerator I feel this shuddering. Weird thing about it is, it started RIGHT as my 75K warranty expired AND within 1000 miles of a trans flush and I used Ford Mercon 3. Now its starting to do this at higher speeds, where at first it only occured at 35-40 MPH out of OD. Its getting worse and at higher speeds.

I called and talked to Pat Goss (expert with a radio show) and he said that there is a TSB. From what he remembers you are supposed to FLUSH the trans again and use Mercon 5.

He also said it can get so bad that it feels as if your driving over rumble strips.

Apparently the Torque Converter is shifting in and out of lock-up.

I went out and test drove some German cars yesterday. They wanted to give me $12K for my 98 Expedition. WHAT A JOKE!

Cousin owns a Porsche, BMW, and Audi dealership. Going there next!

"Fix Or Repare Daily" is holding up to its name.

-FQR 5.4 @ 50K (replaced under warranty)
-on the 4th rear wiper motor
-New trans shudder problem
-WHATS NEXT?

QUESTIONS:

1. Has anyone REALLY fixed this problem with the fluid change? Its expensive to do and I dont want to waste the money if it dont work!

2. What else could it be?

3. I complained about a trans problem BEFORE the warranty was up. About a year ago. Can I still complain to the dealer after the warranty period and get it convered?

4. Any other KNOWN problems?

5. Might this lead to torque converter replacement or does some other *gismo* control the behavior of the converter? What would that cost me?

Allllrighty then! I did a search on this site concerning "SHUDDER" OR "SHUTTER".

Here's what I found:

1. Accumulator Spring

2. Loose Transfer Case.

3. Solenoid AND Line pressure problem.

4. U-Joints.

5. Fluid change and friction reducer additive.

6. Bad transmission.

7. Torque Converter bad.

8. Its normal.

HENCE, WHO THE HELL KNOWS!!!!

I think I might try changing to Mercon V after I talk to the dealership. Maybe Mobil1.

SERIOUSLY thinking about getting rid of this FORD. NEVER buying one again.

Problem is that if someone rear-ends me in my Expy, my family is more likely to survive than in a foreign 3000 pound car! All I can think about is my 16 month old in his car seat in the back and getting hit from behind.

Yea maybe we arent as well off if we hit a wall or a tree in these trucks, but 999 times out of a 1000 its another car. AND MASS WINS EVERY TIME!!!!

Really like to fix the damn thing. Lets stay on this topic and get some resolution.

Please give status, as will I!

I did do a bunch of things...
1. I had the transmission fluid changed and filter changed with mercon v. Thant worked for about 3 months.
2. Changed the same things again, but this time added the additive that ford recomended. That worked for about 3 months.
3. Then I changed the torque converter. Left the same fluid intact. That did nothing.
4. Then changed rear drive shaft front and rear u joints, at the same time looked over the transfer case. ( everything looked good )

So, I am not sure what to do next, and i am debating a $800 tranny overhaul. So any other ideas please let me know.
Thanks for any advice.

First off, tell me what transmission you have and what vehicle.

I have a 5.4 Expedition which has the E4OD transmission.

http://www.alldata.com/TSB/20/982054DA.html

This hyperlink will take you to alldata.com and te current tech service bulletins for the 98 Expy.

97-19-20 TSB calls for something about a MAIN REGULATOR BOOSTER???

You think I could go with Mobil1 instead of Mercon V? Price difference?

I had the trans flushed today... VERY INTERESTING! Turns out, my memory was incorrect and time flies... Last time I flushed the trans was at 68K NOT 74K like I thought. I have 76K now. I also used the recommended Mercon III. The fluid that came out of the flush was already darkening. Quite a bit really for only 8K. I put in 16 qts of fresh Mobil1. Cost $100.15 for 16 qts of Mobil1 trans fluid. They did the flush for $50. I noticed the truck ran MUCH smoother. However, I think I still noticed the shudder. Just not AS bad.

What to do? Sell or keep? UG!

I'll post tomorrow when I drive it to work 20 miles. I only drove it 3 miles after the flush.
