'88 manual tranny issues..
i have an 88 f150 4X4 with the 5.0, a mazda m50d 5speed manual and a borg warner 13-56 manual transfer case...
My issue is i have completly lost 5th gear, it wont even go into detent, like it hits a wall. It also will not stay in reverse, i have to hold it in with all my might and it will still usually pop out.
I own a ford factory manual and it seems to show that i can pull the top cover of tranny without too much difficulty, and im thinking my problem may be in a shift fork, but this all an undereducated guess.
Im pretty handy and an aircraft mechanic by trade, but i have never opened up a transmission. The manual seems to make it simple enough, as long as i dont have to dig into guts of tranny.
Any ideas comments suggestions welcome, appreciated.

Parts trucks in my neck of the woods are not the cheapest things to come by. The yards have quoted me 600 to 850 for no guarantee used oily mess.
I managed to yank it with a friend. We pulled the top off like my manual said to do. The shift forks are worn. New ones are 90 for both, and a few roll pins and plugs knocked out, i should be able to change the forks myself. There are some sneaky ***** and springs i need to watch out for, but i think i can handle it.
The grooves inside tranny where forks ride look perfect, no visible damage. The gears as well look fine, no metal paste or shavings in bottom.
However the groove where the 5th/reverse for lies, was slightly out of place. When I touched it, I heard a click, and it moved slightly aft and stayed, like it was supposed to be there. I think I have found my issue, and hope I can get it all back together without too much trouble.
Ill post some pics before I button her up...
