hard down-shift

ok so what will happen is I will driving at about 40 mph or so and i will give it a little gas to accelerate, and it will but real slow, then it down shifts real hard and jerks the truck. so my dad and i were wondering if this is typical of the f150's(this is the first one he has ever owned) or if there is a problem here.I have a 98 4.6 with an automatic transmission.
any info y'all can give us will help. Thanks.

No idea what's causing the hard downshift. I would say it's not normal. At 40mph, foot the floor, my transmission smoothly picks a lower gear, and I take off.
