4R70W Cooler Line Replacement, How-To

The transmission cooler lines for my 2000 F150, 4.6L, 4x4 have rotted out and require immediate replacement. The problem I'm having is getting to the cooler line fittings on the right side of the 4R70W transmission case. The heat shield for the right side cat. conv. prevents easy access to the cooler line fittings. There are threaded bushings in the transmission case and the cooler lines thread into the bushings. I was able to snake a crowsfoot wrench onto one of the cooler line fittings, but the threaded bushing started to turn too. It looks to me that I need to put a wrench on both the threaded bushing and the cooler line fitting. There just isn't room to do it! Can anyone offer their experience with removing the cat heat shield or how to deal with the cooler lines. Much appreciated. BTW, this transmission does not have the aux cooler. I was able to get the best deal on new cooler lines from the Ford Dealer at about $24 and $35 for the two lines.

I have a similar problem on my 2001 f150 4x4 5.4L, 4R100 Trans. Not only have the cooler lines rotted but the Bypass cooler line that runs between the inlet and outlet is also leaking. Such a hard place to work on and get access with your hands to turn wrenches. I am in the process of removing the heat shield for the first time......will let you know the result.
