Overdrive gone bye bye
Overdrive gone bye bye
Hi Everyone,
I have a 2004 F140 Lariat 4X4 with 144,nnn miles on it. This morning on the way to work, i was driving along around 25mph and the engine started to free rev like it was in neutral. Now if I turn off OD i'm fine, but if i'm at speed and turn on OD it free revs.
What does that sound like to you? Busted OD belt? I can't get it to the shop til Monday and it's all I've got to drive. When I drive it I can hear a faint sound that sounds kinda like what you hear when you're tuning a steel string guitar and tightening one of the strings. Would I do more damage driving it this weekend or would you suggest that I rent something for the weekend to be safe?
I appreciate your feedback!
Arthur

Something with Overdrive band/circuit .
Once the band is "on," your forward clutch disengages. Your forward clutch is 1st gear.
It goes: forward clutch with intermediate clutch to get 2nd gear, and then to the direct clutch to obtain 3rd gear. All 3 clutches are "on" to drive in 3rd gear. The O.D. band applied brakes the one drum, and forcing a greater than > 1:1 ratio in your planetary gear set.
If the servo cannot apply band pressure on command, then you have a neutral. The forward clutch disengages, but now with no overdrive band applied, hence causing a "neutral."
I'm not an expert and someone correct me if I'm off here.

If your truck has the 4r70w trans, this may be your problem but you'll need a trans shop anyways. http://www.sonnax.com/system/announcement/76948-29K.pdf
Thanks, everyone for the replies and especially to MLD for the education! The truck has been parked all weekend and I'll take it in to the dealer in the morning. FYI, I've had all the recommended services at recommended intervals. I've also towed a boat with the truck from day one, so it's been regularly exercised. I typically would turn off the OD if I was going in and out of it at any significant rate while towing. I'll let you all know what they say.
thanks again,

I picked up the truck today. it seems that a snap ring broke and got stuck in the OD servo. Mechanic said that he ran a self test and code P0734 was stored. Anyone know what that code is? Goes on to say Remove valve body and found snap ring for overdrive servo broken, Disassemble and overhaul valve body. Found piece of snap ring stuck in valve body causing valve to be stuck. Replace overdrive snap ring and install valve body. Replace filter and pan gasket. Reprogram PCM to latest level. Replace pinion seal.
Parts $188.90. Total P&L $1038.90. Better than a new tranny at $3500. Thanks everyone for the tips. you were all over it. ;-)

P0734 Improper Ratio for Fourth Gear.
Good to hear your band is still good to go.
I was just into mine for a few modifications: https://www.f150online.com/forums/tr...rvo-4r70w.html
After driving with the OD off for the past 4 months with my trans going into overdrive/neutral, I finally took it in to a shop thinking it was the snap ring issue. Well, the each of the snap rings were in place and it did not look like the band was broken because you could push a screwdriver up and activate it. Put back together and same issue.
The code was Incorrect Gear Ratio and "Transmission Malfunction" on the dash, no other codes or stored codes. I'm thinking a new valve body might fix the problem, or replacing servos? Possibly the OD Servo Regulator Boost Value and Sleeve - Sonnax???
Any ideas? Please help or direct me to the appropriate post.
Thanks!

If you didn't have any sudden symptoms of a slipping band, then it could be your shift solenoids. There are two solenoids that control line pressure to do all shifting. On overdrive 3-4, they are both energized to achieve the shift.
They operate one and the other off, and the other on and the other off, and then both on together.
I doubt you lost it through the hydraulic side via the bushing/ valve. It sounds electronic as you didn't have any slippage to indicate a problem with a loss in valve body pressure.
If the board is bad here on this shift side, I wonder if that code covers this?
They have new OE ones on EBay at a good price.
Funny enough this same thing happened to me christmas eve. The symptoms are no over drive (just goes to neutral), I have 2nd manual however it does not engine break while slowing down. I'll be dropping the pan this week to check it out.
Here is my thread on my repair for this issue

I realize i may have missed something in my searches but I am limited on down time of my truck!! thanks for your help in advance.
so quick question on this subject, I basically have all these symptoms going on, but I had a vibration that seemed to be more with rpm than speed before my OD went out. the truck would vibrate almost like there was a drive shaft out of balance or a tire out of balance. it was mostly at highways speeds while low rpm starting up a hill in OD, and once it down shifted it would go away. my 2nd gear engine breaking does work, but there are no codes seen when scanned with a snap on scanner. I am pretty good with a wrench, but an AT is foreign to me. what step should i take next. The vibration doesn't seem to be a symptom any one else has had from what I've read.
