Angry Oh God It Broke

Okay guys I broke my truck, my 5 speed won't shift into any gear smoothly, I have to force it into every gear, but when it gets in it goes fine, any suggestions? Syncros? Clutch? would like to know since I'm going to have to fight with Ford, only 30,025 miles on the truck... any ideas would help me a lot...

I'm having the same problem, are so are a lot of the other 5-speed owners here. The general concensus here is that the syncros aren't capable of handling all the shifting. I am looking to get mine replaced, but since i am out of warranty, i will be waiting till i can't stand it anymore, or if i can find a decent price. G'LUK

Angry

Don't worry if you're still under warranty. Ford should fix it no problem.

Could be sychros or it could be the clutch slave cylinder. When they go out you have to forse it into gear and it makes it very hard to drive. Also, you could have some linkage out of adjustment causing the same thing. Lastly the clutch may not be fully releasing

too bad hurst/pro 5.0/steeda/B&M etc don't make a short throw shifter for F-150's. the postive stops help a bunch.

sorry you broke and best of luck.

Angry I'm gonna kick my truck's tail pipe

okay I decided earlier sunday morning I was going to rip the tranny out of the truck and give it hell, so I decided to go over to my girlfriend's house, and to make a long story short, it shifted fine until I tried to shift into 3 from 2. It wouldn't go, but after a little forcing and cussing I got it in. Now me and my girl decide to go get a movie, so I said lets take my truck and you won't believe it... My truck ran perfect. not a shift problem once, and driving home tonight not a problem at all... Could this have just been a fluke thing. Consider, I don't tow anything, and I don't drag race or anything like that, could it have been a wild hair... what do you all think and will it hurt my truck to keep on driving it this way if there is no more problems, except once in a blue moon?

Red face tranny

I owned a 97 f-150 xcab 4.2L and manual trans. Had problems with that tranny since it had 1200 miles on it. It would grind going into third gear.....it didnt do it all the time and evertime i took it to the dealership i work at.......they said they couldn't find any problems. Finally, after constantly bitching to the TSM i finally got it fixed (truck had 59,000 when it finally was fixed). Its under warranty.....doesn't matter if you are not have problems now.....have it looked at. If you have the problem documented with the dealership and something happens later.

This may or may not be relevant, but years ago I used to hear about stick shift trans that were low on lube, which caused sticky shifting.

since your problem is with ANY gear, i'm guessing that your issue is the clutch. . . probably not totally releasing. this can happen with clutches that are hydraulically assisted. i believe this is the case with our F150s. i had a VW Corrado with a hydraulic clutch that had exactly those same symptoms. it turned out to be a clutch problem.

Talking The Clutch that is the idea

Okay maybe I didn't break my tranny, I to believe it is the clutch, on further study, my clutch seems mushier than before, also the first time the truck won't do into any gear the clutch pedal was extremely easy to push infact with hardly any effort... is there a way to adjust the clutch pedal, I did notice the push rod on the clutch pedal doesn't go all the way in, at it looks like it might have went in all teh way before from the wear marks on it, I'm going to try and adjust it... if I can... any help would be nice

you cannot adjust it. It is hydraulic. So you need to flush and bleed the unit just like brakes.

Back before I bought my truck I test drove a V6 with 5 speed and I just didn't like the feel of the 5 speed in the truck. Of course I was going from a Mustang GT with a 5 speed to a full size truck with a smaller engine but they didn't have any V8's with a 5 speed on the lot and I wanted to see how the 5 speed was in the trucks before I would get one. I still wish I had a 5 speed over this auto I got now but after reading all the trouble with the 5 speed I'm kind of glad I went with the auto but the auto's have problems as well FORD just needs to put better trany's in there trucks.
