Which transmission fluid?

Hi,

I have a 2006 f150, 5.4l 4x4 and the wife has a 2000 Exped with a 4R100, and I would like to do a tranny fluid exchange and filter in both. I have found that Mercon V is specified for both trannys now, so what fluid should I go with? I am looking at upgraded to Amsoil or Mobil 1 Synthetic, but should I just stay with the factory Motorcraft? Also would it be best to go with a synthetic in the transfer cases as well? Thanks for the advice.

I would go with the Amsoil in both vehicles as well as the transfer case. It's a little expensive, but, in my opinion superior to anything out there. Many members here are using it it in their vehicles. Not putting Mercon V down, but just just stating that Amsoil seems to be the better choice, cost not being a factor.

Go with the latest version of mercon/dexron. I use amsoil in my truck transmission. I also have changed my transmission fluid about every 10k since I bought the truck 5 years ago but I plan on running the Amsoil 50k or until the tranny dies wich ever comes first. Truck had 103k on it when I bought it drove it home and dropped the pan it still had the lolipop in it so I doubt it had ever been changed or at least the pan had never been off. I'm luck its got about 135k on it now and it works great.

Use any fluid that meets Mercon V specs in the tranny and transfer case. I agree that Amsoil is the best if you don't mind paying the price.

So I have read that to do a decent fluid exchange I would be needing around 18 quarts per vehicle at $11 per quart. If I was to just drop the pan and do a filter and then top the 5 quarts I lost can I still use Amsoil and mix it with the Motorcraft that is still in there? Thanks again in advance.

Supposedly you can, but I wouldn't. If you are going to use $11 fluid, do it right.
