trans pull strong in first but does not shift

this is actually my friends truck who i am trying to help out. its a 1989 f150 with a 5.0.... not sure exactly whcih transmission but its square and has 2 cut corners on the pan and elec plug on the top of tranny and on the speedo cable.

he tells me a year ago the transmission stopped shifting after shifting hard a few times. last week he decided to move it out of his way so he popped in a battery and just like that it started shifting again.

well after 2 days of driving it around it stopped shifting again. so we decided to change the filter.... but this did nothing except fix the leak on the pan.

any directions on which way to go next would be much appreciated thank you for your time

its an AOD.

it had a code for a neutral safety switch, but we fixed that..... the strangest part is that it pulls so hard in first and rev, no slipping at all. once you get to about 28mph it quits pullin and it will not pick back up til around 6mph... or you can stop and take off again. but it will not shift.

the pan was nice and clean with minimal shavings and the fluid did not smell burnt nor was it black.
