Transmission ID

Well, I have a 2004 F150 5.4 w/ the 4r75w I think (transmission code B) and you guessed it the O/D just went out last Saturday. So, I started to work on it all the normal was true, partial broken snap ring (still in place). I am 99% sure I got all of the old parts out of the VB and removed the O/D servo. Replace with same since it looked okay, but forgot to check if the band was in place :-( But I figured that since the servo was never "loose" it should have not been any different (Was this a wrong assumption?) Now it is back together and has no engine braking in 2nd, so I know the O/D band is working. All this is with the O/D switched off.

So my real question is if I pick up a used transmission from the junk yard, what is the easiest way to tell it is a 4r75w or e compared to a 4r70? Do they each have a 14 bolt gasket, part number, etc? I have searched this forum up and down and could seem to find the answer to this. Thanks in advance!

you have to put it in hard 2nd (2nd on your indicator) and try it.

They all have the same pan. 4r70e 01-06 (I think 06) 4.6 and 01-03 5.4. 4r75w 04-05 5.4. 4r75e 06-08 5.4

Thanks for the reply Gotts!
Yup, stuck the lever on the big 2 and nothing but coasting @ 40 mph after I left off the gas. But, it does rev and then try to slip into 3rd with O/D on...

I was afraid that all the cases look the same, the yard down the street from me has a ton of the transmissions to use to swap/rebuild/etc for $450 but I just want to make sure I pick one up that will be plug and play, till I get this one fixed.
