4wd engagement problem

Vehicle

2001 F150 Supercrew 5.4l 4wd

Issue

When I turn the switch to 4wd high, I get a loud and rapid grinding noise. It isn't a kachunk grind like from a manual transmission but a very fast/rapid grind or clicking noise that will stop if I turn the switch back to 2wd.

Once I slow down to a stop the truck will engage into 4wd.

What do you guys think is the problem??

Any help/suggestions is most appreciated, thanks.

check the fluid level in the transfer case.

I am bumping this back up.

I took the truck to the Ford dealer, they say everything checks out, the problem is the transfer case itself, new one/rebuild needed.

The 4wd still works just fine as long as you switch into 4wd while stopped.

When switching into 4wd while moving you get a very high pitch grind most of the time. Some times it will work, but not too often.

I picked up the truck, not sure what to do.

Any suggestions??????

It could be a worn shift fork or something else.....best bet would be to find a replacement at a salvage yard....
