Lost Overdrive in my 04 Supercrew...5.4L

So Friday night I was driving home from work, when overdrive completely dumped in my truck...runs great as long as I have overdrive off, but if I leave overdrive on the tach just climbs without OD engaging...now I know I have read that the snap ring is a big problem with these trannys, and i'm not throwing a CEL or any codes, so I'm assuming that the problem is mechanical, but I was just wondering if anyone on here has been through the same problem, and if so, anything I should watch out for or anything I should know when I bring it to the tranny shop tomorrow morning....

me too

just happened to me tuesday drivin down the highway no warning went to accelerate and nothin. NJ trans guy who came highly recommended by a trusted friend tells me the o/d technology is from 80's and basically garbage. no simple fix and tranny needs overhaul. 58,678 miles WTF. He recomended aftermarket torque converter and said he would update electronics so o/d problem should be resolved. $2,250.00 any body else. BTW trans guy was surprised that no codes were activated

Just curious did your mechanic give you any insight as to why this happened? and how many miles on yours?

Mine has 90k, and the shop said it was a common problem with a retainer ring...

My 04's tranny just went out right before I reached 60,000 and it cost me $1800 for a rebuild. I'm none too happy considering this is a very common problem with our trucks yet Ford never did anything.

It should be, but are you still under warranty? Seems to me that 05's only had a 3/36 powertrain warranty.

Mine went out at 140,000, had it beefed up for the turbo I'm installing along with a small stall. $1600 cash out the door!
