Transmission ?'s

I have a 1979 F150 4x4, 351 5.8L engine and I need a new manual transmission. I was wanting to know what i could put in my truck. I would like a bigger transmission so i can haul cattle with. I cant afford a new one so ill have to get it from the junkyard. Could some one tell me what i can and cant use. Can i use one out of a F250 80s model or does it need to be around the same years 73-79?

Thanks

The ZF 5-speed is a good heavy duty unit. It was used in diesels and 460s, I think starting in 88? Not sure if they were used in smaller engines, or what the bellhousing blot pattern is to connect to your 351. Using a later year OD version would be nice for when you are not towing. Adapting the newer trans to your older transfer case may be an issue, or use the transfer case that is mated with the new trans.

Sorry not an exact answer, but might get you started.

Ford only has 3 different bellhousing patterns - diesel, Triton, and everything else. A ZF5 out of anything except a diesel, 4.6, 5.4, or 6.8 will bolt up. I don't know what other considerations there would be though. I'm pretty sure it would have to be out of a 4wd and you might have to get the transfer case too.

What tranny do you have now (I'm thinking either a T18 or T19) and what's wrong with it?

Hey thanks guys thats gets me plenty started. Not sure on the transmission though. When the truck ran a few years ago it was grinding bad from 1-2nd gear. Grandpa had used it to haul cattle and feed all the time so it has wear and tear on the tranny. I want to use it for haulin and feedin hay too so i just thought i would jsut get a new tranny a heavier one that will handle it. Ill try to look into what tranny is has. Thanks again guys you all were alot of help and 38 chevy fix that handle
