Towing upgrades
Towing upgrades
I got a new Travel Trailer and am looking at upgrading the tansmission cooler and adding a deeper pan. The trailer has a GVW of 7500lbs. I have an 05 Scab XLT with the trailer package. I also have an Edge programmer. Are these upgrades worth doing versus the factory cooler? What coolers are the better ones to get, I was thinking about a cooler with an aux. fan.
You need to know what your current trans temps are now before you think you need to 'upgrade' the OEM setup...
The coolers on the 2004 + F150's are HUGE compared to the OEM units on earlier years....
If you have the 5.4, you'll have a pretty good sized cooler... Open the hood and look down in front of the rad... That's your trans cooler... I wish I had one that big!
Yet, my little cooler keeps my trans temps in check towing a #5000 TT.. The most it's been on my Autometer gauge is 210*. Well within a reasonable temp, considering I was going up a 6% grade in second gear going 50 mph pulling around 3500 rpms on a 90* + day with the A/C cranked in the cab!
(I take my temps from the trans output line too, so it's the hottest the fluid is getting.. Not just a pan temp, which is after the trans cooler...)
I was concerned about my actual water and trans temps, so I got aftermarket gauges and found that my cruising temps were in the 180* - 195* range for both, towing the trailer or not on the flat hwy.. I determined that my temps were within reason, and didn't need to 'upgrade'...
With your rig, you can get a 'scangauge' that plugs into your COM port and will give you actual readings, so that's where you should start IMO...
