secondary cooler

Hello, i read some where on our transmission, that the tranny doesn't use the cooler until 180F? Is this true? if so would it be a bad idea to add a 2nd cooler in line with the factory one if this is the case of it not using them till 180F?

Has any one added a second cooler, if so what kind of results have you seen in temp decreases?

Please let me know

Daniel

Would it be just slightly possible that the thermostat is added for a reason? i.e. to prevent the fluid from running too cool...and that adding another cooler to try and superseed this may not be the best idea?

Yes, your truck does have a thermostat in the line to prevent fluid flow to the cooler until a certain temp...but I'm pretty sure it's not quite that hot.. Additionally, the thermostat is way back by the tranny almost (beside the [engine] oil pan on the right hand side...you can see it) so it would take some creative plumbing of additional custom lines to install a cooler on the tranny side of the thermostat.

Yes, for the most part a second cooler is a bad idea and in most cases not needed. Long gone are the days of fluids and stuff being kept as cool as you can keep them...that was our dads vehicles, not ours. Yes, a tranny can be "too cool". The cooler on your truck is very efficient and thus the reason they installled a thermostat.

I would also ask why do you want another cooler?? Do you do some major towing? Do you have a temp gauge telling you your tranny is running way too hot?
