04 transmission od problem
04 transmission od problem
I had a problem last week. I went to pass and lost all forward drive. I pulled over and tried a few things. after turning off overdrive, I was able to drive home. If overdrive was engaged, I lost drive. I tried the following day with the same problem. The following day all was ok and all is still ok (2k miles). I have been reading the forums and think the nost likely culprit is the snap ring. I am not versed in transmissions but do not fear tearing into it to an extent. My question is, where do I look for this snap ring? Do I just have to drop the pan and valve body or do I need to drop the transmission? Is there a good publication out there to follow? Any help is appreciated. FYI. 2004 F150 Lariet, 5.4 2WD, Supercrew. 170K miles.

Drop the tranny pan, and drain fluid, then take out your valve body. There are quite a bit of bolts, 15 or so if I remember right. Once the valve body is out, (this was my experience) I found 2 pieces of the snap ring in the valve guides. I used compressed air to get them out. I replaced the ring, and then cleaned up good and put it all together.
It took me and another guy about 3 hours all together.
Keep in mind, this was about 3 years ago, and I might have missed some important stuff. Do some searching, I am sure when you put the valve body back in there is a pattern to torque and tighten.
If someone else wants to chime in then feel free.
Good luck
Eric
I know the Haynes manual won't help you on this one. It doesn't show the tranny disassembly. Just removal. But once it's disassembled, you will see what the problem is. I know the Ford dealership wanted 1300 bucks to fix it. I fixed it for 3 bucks. I went the snap ring route in hopes that it was the problem and got lucky.
