tranny in trouble

I have an '04 5.4L ext cab Lariat with 190k miles.
Transmission just started slipping on my way home. Trans Light came on.
Have NEVER touched tranny or any drivetrain component. NEVER had a tuneup. Truck has run GREAT with just brakes and oil ch/.

What work should I have looked at and what should the approx cost be?

THANKS

190k without touching the tranny? Consider yourself VERY lucky.

What should have been done? Trans fluid flush and filter changes every 24k to 30k. Today's transmissions are VERY particular to clean fluid; the solenoids prefer clean fluid to work properly, along with the bands, clutches, etc.

As for the problem, hard to say without reading any codes if any are present (does the O/D light blink?), and without test driving it, but I would say you're looking at a complete rebuild, and that could cost you up to $2500 depending on what parts need replaced, labor costs, etc. I would suspect the transmission fluid is beyond its usefullness causing A LOT of the slipping problems, but there could be other component damage (forward clutch, torque converter), and this is best taken care of in a complete rebuild.
