Intermittent 4x4 issue

Hi guys, I am new to the forum here. Been poking around seeing if anyone has had the issue i have been seeing but haven't seen any posts about it yet. I have an 04 (not the heritage) F150 XLT with the 5.4 motor and the electronic on the fly 4wd on the dash. As far as i know everything is stock. It has about 82k miles on it if that matters. We got pounded with snow this past weekend so i have been using my 4wd when necessary. While driving in 4HI the light on the dash keeps going out. If i gun the throttle up to see if it really is out of 4HI the light comes back on and i dont get wheel spin in the rear. It seems like the light turns out when i hit patches of pavement that dont have snow on them (they are still wet) or when i am going downhill in a straight line. If i try to turn when it is slippery, go up a slippery hill, hit the brakes or i hit deeper snow then the light comes back on after about 10-15secs. As far as i can tell the 4wd isnt turning off because i dont fishtail at all. Any help or ideas would be appreciated, thanks.

Snowing again tonight so tried using the 4HI again. Took a good 5 miles or so for the 4wheel to come on. Once it was on it stayed on. If i turned it off, it would take another few miles to actually turn back on. About 4 inches or so of snow on the roads this time so a little concerned due to it being kinda hilly near me.

My light just went out all of a sudden this morning...worked fine last night. I took it to the dealership and they put it up on the rack. Free spins in 2wd, locks in at 4 hi and lo...just no light. They said check the shift motor on the back of the transfer case. I'd recommend checking whether you are engaging or not first...then crawl under there and take a look at the motor. I have to wait until spring because I can't fit in the garage...so let me know what you find out.

I cant get mine in the garage either. Have a porsche 944s2 with a completely shot battery that i cant even charge anymore. Driveway is too steep for me to lift up the front end either. When i put it in 4low the light comes on and i hear/feel it clunk in. 'Plowed' (aka rammed snow bank into the street) my driveway in 4L so i know it is meshing 4L. Even with the light off in 4H i dont have problems with fishtailing unless i really get on it so it might be engaging. I cant hear it engage though. I will check out that shift motor though.
