my 94 f150 has a e4od tranny in it which means i have an electronic over drive switch on it. i was wondering if i could swap it out with a different tranny other than the e40d . if i can what all do i have to do get it done or am i stuck with getting the one i have replaced or rebuilt. if i have to get it rebuilt is that the best thing to do or get a new one instead.

I'd get it rebuilt.

Find a reputable trans shop, and ask them to do the rebuild with the latest updated parts.

Some of the early E4OD's had issues that were addressed in the later models.
My 91 F250 had E4OD behind a 460, and the shop I had rebuild mine did the updates.
I also told them that I tow with the truck and they did some mods to beef things up.

One mod is to upgrade the cooler lines to 3/8 inch braided stainless. The bypassed the radiator cooler and used only the aftermarket cooler that I had installed which was a giant Heyden. I had installed the biggest cooler that I could fit behind the grille. It was supposedly enough for a class A motorhome....

The E4OD is about as bulletproof as it gets properly built.

thanks for the info , i might be trying that. ammco told me that they usea rebuild kit that cost around $300 and it was called the beast. i have never delt with them . they told me that they have rebuilt alot of e4od trannys and only had one come back and the reasom was a simple fix. they also told me that they do all of the local police vehiles as well. i do know it is going to cost me around $2000 or a little over to get it done. i just rebuilt an engine a put it in the truck and i had a feeling the tranny was going to go . so if you sat that getting it rebuilt would be the best thing to do i might just do that. how do you feel about ammco are they a good transmission shop.

I think ammoco is pretty well trusted in the name of transmissions. You might see if you or a bud can remove/install the trans for you to save some money. Good luck.

Ammco may be reputable now but about 25 yrs ago, they were ripping people off so bad that the attorney generals of 12 states got together and went after them.

This is how the scam went and this is what happened to an engineer who worked for me. His 74 Z28 Camaro's automatic transmission was shifting funny. he took it to Ammco. They called and told him they had to disassemble it to diagnose and it would cost a minimum of $135. he came to me and i told him it sounded to me like vacuum modulator valve in the side of the transmission wasn't working properly and it only cost less than $10 and could be unscrewed and installed easily from the outside. Normally the customer would authorize the $135 and then they would call back and say the bad news is the transmission needed rebuilding. The good news is that we have a lifetime national warranty. This guy declined on my advice. When he went to pick up the car, their mechanic told him that he would fix it that night at the gas station for $35. That night he replaced the vacuum modulator and it was repaired.

I also met a guy at a campground at Myrtle Beach who had worked for them and he said he had to quit because his conscience couldn't take it. he said he rebuilt a lot of transmissions that didn't need it.

Individual shops are going to only be as good as the owner/manager that runs it. So ask around local.

You could use another tranny that you want, with lots of work and sacrifice.
